Raines Vikings

When you step onto the campus at William M. Raines H.S there is one thing that differentiates the school from the rest , and that’s TRADITION.  The school has a rich tradition in athletics. But not just football… Bullet Bob Hayes is an alum, as well as Dr. Julian E. White former band director of the Florida A&M Marching 100.  And this is what you see when you walk on campus. IMG_2082The marching band and auxiliary rehearsing, the cross country team warming up, the basketball team running sprints, the dance team going over their moves, and of course the football team exiting the field house preparing for practice.  It’s not just football, its an experience and  you can’t have football at Raines without the total football experience. Now if we were to speak of experience in the other sense of the word, there isn’t much of it on the Viking’s team this year.

“We’re not a senior laden team, we’re a young team, but we still have leaders”. -Coach WileyIMG_2098

On defense junior LB Michael Pickney ( UM commit ) is the unquestioned leader. His size puts him right up there with some of the top Seniors around the city. On offense juniors Solomon Kenny , and Rick Wells (6’3 190 lb  WR. ) lead a talented but young group of players. So how will Coach Wiley’s young team respond to the hype of the first game of the season?  “Excited” is the word that came to mind. The team is excited to run around and see what happens under the Friday Night under the lights.

* I dont think there’s a harder schedule in the state than the one the Raines Vkings play. Fortunately for them, many of the teams they play are not in their division. But after Ed White, the Vikings face what we call the ” killer B’s” . They play host to the Bulls of North Western, the Buccaneers, and the Bulldogs. Three of the best programs in the country.

Outlook:

Even with a ferocious schedule, its hard to count Raines out. They are young yes, but they have focused leadership. They will be battled tested early which is always good for a talented team. When they get into the division games they should be clicking on all cylinders. Look for them to be playoff bound once again.
