Gilbert blanks Oceanway 22-0; Wins 67th Game

The  Panther defense forced it’s third shut out of the season, as Matthew Giilbert defeated Oceanway Middle 22-0. Oceanway began the contest forcing and recovering a Gilbert fumble , but could not turn that opportunity into points as Gilbert held on defense. The next offensive opportunity Gilbert drove the ball down field and capped off the scoring with a touchdown run by Chris’tal Smith to lead 7-0 after one quarter.

It didn’t take long for Gilbert to increase their lead thanks to their defense that stalled the Buccaneers, which led to a big reception by #4 Artis Maddox in the second quarter that put the Panthers up 14-0. The Panther defense would stop Oceanway again on their next drive by forcing an interception of Oceanway’s Quarterback #10 Jamal Gelsey. But Oceanway’s defense would hold this time not allowing Gilbert to score. At halftime the score was just 14-0.

Both teams traded shots all afternoon with Oceanway gaining opportunities on offense to get on the board. On one drive, Gelsey would lead the Buccaneers offense down field in combination with the  aggressive running by RB #35 Leonard Harris. But the Gilbert defense tightened up just as they had done all year and had a successful goal line stand stopping Oceanway on the one yard line. It would go into the fourth quarter 14-0, when Gilbert added its final and deciding touchdown to go up 22-0.

With the win Matthew Gilbert gained its third victory of the season, its 67th win in a row, and another week with a bulls-eye on their back. But this team isn’t worried about the attention it’s getting from around the country, their focused on the opponents in front of them.

“Like I said, much respect to a improved Oceanway team and good game! ! 22-0, We march on to our goal. .. Thank everyone for the support as we get a step closer! !”

-Asst Coach Holloway

Next up for Gilbert is a match with Eugene Butler where they will look to keep their streak going. Oceanway will look to rebound with another big game verses conference rival Highlands.
