Columbia (Lake City) took down the #1 ranked team in Florida’s Class 4A poll the Bolles Bulldogs last Friday in emphatic fashion .

Bolles would strike first, scoring a touchdown in the first quarter when Quarterback Mac Jones hit Isaiah Westbrook on a short pass. But Columbia would respond as Quarterback #33 Davin Schuck hit his receiver Dallon Washington to tie the score 7-7.

Bolles would attempt to go to the air as the Tigers stuffed the run game.Jones dropped back but his pass was intercepted by DB #1 Alphonso Battle who raced down the sideline for a touchdown to put Columba up 14-7. Bolles was forced to pass again when Jones was intercepted again, this time by #28 Kenny Johnson, a pick 6 on consecutive drives made it 21-7. At halftime Columbia led 28-14. Thanks to another touchdown pass by Schuck for the Tigers and a TD pass by Jones to Zac Crosby.

Latrell Williams would put the game out of reach. After Bolles inched closer with a couple of field goals, Williams picked off yet another Bolles pass and raced 81 yards for the touchdown to make it 35-20. Columbia would add another score to win the game 49-20.

There weren’t many people around the High School Football world that gave Columbia a chance against Bolles last Friday night. I however was one of them (Someone somewhere beats a dead horse). Columbia has routinely been ranked in the top five of our power rankings all season. Even after their loss to Escambia the week before, there were several things to like about the Tigers going into the game
#1. Points: Columbia can score lots of points. They’ve proven all year that they can play with the high powered offenses in Florida. They scored 53 points against Lee. The same Lee that held Sandalwood to seven points last week. They scored 57 against Gainseville, 41 versus Escambia and 39 against Bucholtz. Columbia averaged 43.2 points per game coming into the contest.
#2. Columbia’s Road: Bolles ran into a team in Columbia that had a schedule even harder than theirs. The Tigers have played Escambia, Tallahassee Lincoln, Bucholtz, and Gainesville. The same Gainesville that played Bucholtz and North Marion close. North Marion has one of the top recruits in the country in Jordan Woods . These are all teams who have proven they can play good football against top programs. I’m a firm believer that a team’s schedule means everything in high School football. The moment the first snap occurred, Columbia knew that Bolles was nothing they hadn’t faced before this season. They weren’t intimidated.
#3. Bolles let down: It was time for a Bolles let down. After dominating lesser teams this season and man handling very good teams from even higher districts, Bolles found themselves as the top dog not the underdog. They were in the same position last year when Raines defeated them at home in the regular season. Every team suffers a let down and it was just that time for Bolles.

So what does it all mean. Well let’s state the obvious.. It means that Columbia is a very good team. After their victory over Bolles, someone asked a question in the Duval City Football sports talk blog ” is Columbia the real deal?” In short… YES!
Yet what about Bolles.. Does this loss mean they aren’t as powerful as we thought they were. Are they not the best team in 4A in the state? Is Raines a lock to defeat them in three weeks? Naaah, this loss means none of the above. In my own conspiracy theory mind, I actually believe Corky Rogers intentionally calls games certain ways for his team to lose a game each year. It allows his team to not get complacent, and lures his opponents into the dog house. Ok maybe that’s a bit of a reach. You don’t reach 450 wins by giving them away randomly each season. All the loss means is a more focused and determined bulldog team heading into the final weeks of the regular season. Not good news for Atlantic and Fernandina Beach.
