Athlete to watch: An athlete to watch out for is Kai’la Kirkland of James Weldon. She is one of those rare athletes that only comes around every so often. On a James Weldon Johnson Track Team full of future stars, she is unquestionably the star of stars.

Surprise of the Meet: Goes to the only 6th grader on the Oceanway Track Team Christian Ellis. Ellis won both his heats in the 100 and 200 meters, and placed 3rd overall in the 200 meters.

Quote of the Day- ” That kid is fast”

Former NFL Star Lito Sheppard was in attendance at the track meet to cheer on his daughter and support the youth in the community. After seeing Oceanway’s 8th grader Leanord Harris win the 100 meters, Sheppard mentioned to a colleague ” That kid is fast”.  Not every day that a NFL great and one of the fastest athletes ever to play in the city can give you props!
