Local Athletes Shine at State Track & Field Championships

Bradenton Florida-  IMG Academy was the setting for the 2016 FHSAA State Track & Field competion and several local athletes participated in various events. The area was well represented in several sports, coming away with state titles and bringing them back to North East Florida. Here are a few highlights from the FHSAA State Track & Field weekend.

Fletcher High School’s Kayley Delay took home the state championship in the 4A Girls 3200M. She ran an amazing 10:30. She also won the runner up in the 1600m. It caps off a year in which she dominated distance in our area. At the Gateway Conference Championships she won the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m showing the range of her versatility.

Deandre Petty has brought much success and limelight to the Jackson High School Athletic program. He is a shining star for them, and he let his light shine even brighter at state. Petty won the Boys 2A 800 meters state championship. It has been an eventful week for the talented Tiger from Jacksonville’s eastside. He solidified his college commitment to Bethune Cookman University in Dayton Beach Florida, and a week later proved to the school that they made the right decision in courting him by winning the state championship.

Justin Pacifco may have had one of the finest careers in Florida High School Track & Field History. The University of Florida commit seems to win where ever he competes and it was no different at the 2016 State Championships. The Flagler phenom won the 4A 800M championship with a time of 1:52:8. His year was so spectacular that he was named Prep Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

Creekside’s Jackson Storey won 800m state championship in dramatic fashion. The 3A champion ran a 1:56:03, and at the finish line dove across the line to ensure the victory as other runners paced just behind him. Storey proved this year that he will give it all he’s got.

Caitlin Collier is a remarkable athlete. Her career at Bolles has consisted of accolades after accolades. Yet she would not let the extent of her success stop on the first coast. She took her talents to Bradenton Florida and showcased them for everyone to see. Collier won the 2A 800M, 1600M, and 3200M championships. Three more accolades to add to her packed trophy case of accomplishments for the terrific athlete.

 

The Bolles 4X800 Girls Track team captured the state title as well. Dannheim, Rachel Shapiro, Brittany Wilkinson and Ally Hajda won in a time of 9:26.05. It is their third title in a row.

The 3A 300 Meter Hurdles was won with a time of 37.30. Your winner, Paxon’s own Braxton Canady. Canady also was the runner up in the 110M Hurdles! It cemented a spectacular season for Canady one that saw him officially commit to Oregon. He’ll be taking his speed and athleticism out west to compete in the Pac-10, where some of the best track & Field runners in the world come from that collegiate conference. Congrats on a great year!

The First Coast Girls 4×1 Team made history for Jacksonville in Bradenton. Takeyiah Lowry, Antwoinisha Bryant, La’Queria Bryant & Chayla Hobbs became the first Girls State Champions in First Coast School History! That’s 26 years that the school has been in existence, and the young ladies of the 4X1 team will live in infamy.

Palatka Track & Field Team as enjoyed a very successful season. The team has banned together under Coach Steven Gonzalez and the other coaches to excel to incredible heights. The Panthers propelled to even higher heights at state as the Girls 4X1 Team won the 2A State Championships with a time of 47.10!

The star of stars for Palatka this year was without question Ka’Tia Seymour. She blazed the competition all year including at the Bob Hayes Invitational Track Meet here in Jacksonville. She won the granddaddy of them all the state 100 meters with a time of 23.98.

University Christian Boys 1A 4×1 Champions!

Freshman James Tarver, Hussein Howe ECU commit,Rachuan Mitchell Southern Miss commit, and UCF Commit Otis Anderson brought in the championship for the 4X1 team in the 1A State Title! What a season for these athletes getting a gold medal to go with football state championship rings!

What a great victory Bishop Kenny gained at the State Championships with their 4×8 team. They banned together and got better all season. Hard work paid off as they sit atop the highest track & field platform in the state.Congratulations!
