Arlington and Mayport squared off in this south division match-up for first place. Both teams came into the contest at 2-1 on the season, and the winner would have the inside track to a division title.
Mayport was on a roll. After dropping its first game to Stillwell, the Sharks had reeled off two in a row against Darnell Cookman and Fort Caroline. So they were extremely confident coming into the contest and it showed. The Sharks went up early in the game seemingly catching Arlington by surprise with their game planning. Mayport was visibly a well coached team, and late into the second quarter they builta 20-14 lead. Arlington on the other hand, had just begun.
Just before the half, the Vikings scored on a run and the two point conversion to make it 22-20 going into half time. At this point it was all she wrote for Mayport as Arlington began to physically dominate their opponent.
The Vikings are a big team, and wore down Mayort in the second half with their offensive and defensive lines. Arlington’s coaching staff focused on second half adjustments to add two more scores to make the final score 36-20.
Both teams played hard and gave maximum effort, yet the Vikings athletes at RB and LB prevailed in this one. After losing to Fletcher last week, Arlington was able to get back on the winning track this week and move to 3-1. They’ll face Kernan Middle next week. Mayport on the other hand drops to 2-2 and will take on rival Fletcher next week.
