2016 Spring Football Recap: Trinity Christian vs Raines

Our final spring football recap features the well anticipated matchup between two teams that made it to the State Finals in 2015. The Trinity Christian Conquerors vs The Raines Vikings.

The game was billed as a must see by many fans of High School Football. Numerous scouts converged on the graveyard to see what both teams were bringing back for the 2016 season. What they saw was two teams that possessed alot of talent, yet were heading in opposite directions.

Trinity jumped out of the gate like a greyhound in Orange Park. Rasheed Martin began the explosive plays with a 25 yard run. Derrick Smith would catch a 40 yard pass from Legend Brumbaugh to set up D.J Matthews. Matthews would score on a 10 yard touchdown reception to put Trinity up 7-0.

Trinity would get the ball back and continue the track meet. A 45 yard run by Martin led to another D.J Matthews touchdown. Mathews is one of those players that comes around every blue moon. Everyone knows how electrifying he is with the ball in his hands, but he is also a winner. After helping First Coast go deep into the playoffs two years ago, Matthews would go on to win a state championship with Trinity last year. When he is on the field, its like a video game, but Matthews is the only one on the stick. This summer he has wowed the country with his spectacular moves at “The Opening”, 7 on 7 showcase.

A score of 14-0 in the first quarter seemed like it couldn’t get worse, until disaster struck Raines. This time Shaun Wade was the culprit as he picked off a pass by QB Ivory Durham IV returning it 45 yards for a touchdown. Wade is a five star recruit that is one of the best in the country at his position. He showed in the spring game why he is considered the best, as he put his team up 21-0.

After a 53 yard field goal made the score 24-0 Trinity, Raines began to settle into their offense. Raines began to move the ball down field. RB Brandon Marshall caught a nice screen pass from Durham and moved it into Trinity territory. Not to long after, Ivory Durham IV would extend the drive with his legs and connect with Matt Drayton on a slant for the Vikings first score of the game.

Durham came over from Cedar Creek last year where he lit up the stat sheets with his passing. He works hard at his craft and it shows up in his play on the field. He is mechanically sound and precise with his throws. He is dangerous on the run but is a throw first quarterback. Minus the first half jitters, Raines looks to have a gem in Durham at QB.

Brandon Marshall is also a kid who looks to be coming into his own as the starting tailback for the Vikings. He showed explosiveness being able to accelerate through openings considering his stokcky frame.

Raines was without their star return man and WR Willie Wright who had surgery this summer. They were able to achieve some highlights in the game, however the Vikings few bright spots were over shadowed by the dominance of the Trinity arsenal. A 24-6 score ballooned to 31-6 when Rasheed Martin scored from 10 yards out again. Martin is an impressive athlete with the ability to run hard and be quick in the same cut. Not many athletes can accomplish this.

Not to be lost in the luster of offense is the Trinity defensive effort in the trenches. Dominique Killins would get a score for the defense on a fumble recovery making it 38-6. Tyreke Johnson and Eriq Gilyard are rising Juniors on Trinity’s defense that are already considered tops in the nation at their position by analyst. They lead a defense that dominated a Raines team in just two quarters as the game was called at halftime due to weather. Final Score 38-6 Trinity.

Raines has spent the summer working on 7 on 7 camps to fine tune the chemistry with their playmakers and signal caller. They can be proud of the effort they showed against one of the best teams in the country. As for Trinity reloading means the next man up, and they showed in spring that they will be even harder to beat this year with their young players coming of age, and their seniors leading the way.
