2016 Spring Football Recap!! Fletcher vs Ponte Vedra

DuvalSports.com will recap all the spring football games in Northeast Florida this summer! Check out this game’s recap below.

The Ponte Vedra sharks smelled blood in the water during their spring contest against the Fletcher Senators. Still without a head coach, Fletcher is a team with lots of talent but no identity, which made for the perfect prey for a Ponte Vedra Team that’s tightly managed by Coach Matt Toblin and just as talented.

It all starts at the Quarterback position for Ponte Vedra. This spring, starter Nick Tronti (2017) has made leaps and bounds both physically and mentally. At 6’2 and 210 lbs, Tronti has grown into the ideal frame for a college quarterback, and programs have started to notice.

Tronti has received offers from various schools including the two listed above, so he and his team had alot to play for even in a spring contest. They got started quick as Tronti hit #5 Marshall Few on a beautiful throw to the corner of the endzone to put them up 7-0. Nick Tronti would throw for 140 yards and 3 TDS in the first half, looking decisive in his reads, and the offense as a whole looking precise in their responsibilities. Hal Swan would catch and run for touchdowns, and another touchdown reception was hauled in by WR Marc Calvin putting Ponte Vedra up 28-7. It’s evident that the quarterback and receivers have worked together in the off-season. Swan is one of the hardest workers on the team and it showed in his spring production.

It took Fletcher’s offense a while to get clicking but they found their groove in the second half. Joseph Harris (2018) had big touchdown runs of 70 and 80 yards. The Coaches really like this kid and describe him as a “make you miss type of guy”. He’s joined by Calvin Lewis who comes over from Atlantic Coast who is expected to have a thousand yard season.

A 28-7 lead was cut to 28-21 by Fletcher, but Ponte Vedra’s defense and kicking game made the difference, cementing the 38-21 victory. #24 Cade Macri had a sack and forced fumble setting up a touchdown. He made several plays for the Sharks on defense, fighting through blockers, keeping outside contain, and even dropping into coverage. The 6’1 outside linebacker showed promise early in his playing career and has shown this spring that he is also ready to take it to the next level.

Ponte Vedra looks impressive in spring. The defense shows to be aggressive and hopes to force turnovers this year. They will look to be in the right positions to confuse offenses forcing opposing QBs into mistakes. This works in their favor getting the ball back into the hands of their offense. The Ponte Vedra Coaching staff should be very pleased with what they saw this spring.

Fletcher’s coaches probably arn’t pleased with the spring game’s outcome, but they have a lot to be optimistic about. Their starting Quarterback is 6’3 and 215lbs, but he is very young. They rotated four quarterbacks in the spring game. They’ll need to decipher who will be tossing the rock this fall, as they already know who will be catching it. Jeremiah Payton is just a rising sophomore but has shown the coaches that he will be one of the best in this area for years to come.

The backbone of the offense is unquestionably offensive Tackle Cordavien Suggs. Suggs is a mountain and has proven this spring unmovable and hard to get around for defenders in practice and in the spring game. He has received offers from some of the top schools in the country. He recently narrowed his list on twitter.

Fletcher’s defense did not perform well as a unit against Ponte Vedra in the spring game, but there are several athletes on the unit that have all the skills to be great as long as they can come together as a one.

Fletcher will work on getting the right guy to lead the team as head coach, and building team unity in voluntary off-season workouts. They have a young team with tons of potential, the key is working hard to reach it. The man with the plan for the program may already be on staff. Only time will tell what direction this team is heading after spring football.
