DuvalSports.com will recap all the spring football games in Northeast Florida this summer! Check out this game’s recap below!
Fleming Island defeated Menendez 14-10 in their 2016 spring football game. The Fleming Island Golden Eagles scored two touchdowns on running plays from Jawan Floyd (6yds) and Kesean Young (2yds) late in the contest to get the victory. Fleming Island is led by quarterback Spencer Mollnow, the rising senior with big expectations going into the fall. However this spring, the quarterback is focused on simply learning the new system of newly promoted head coach Damenyum Springs. Mollnow has a lot of talent on offense and showcased that last year.
It was a defensive match up for the most part, as both teams capitalized on turnovers. Menendez scored first on a 20-yard field goal by Estin Thiele to go up 3-0. It was the result of a interception and return by Demario Douglas. Douglas intercepted two passes on the day. He picked off a Mollnow pass on the Golden Eagles’ third play of the game.
Deon Pate is another player on defense that has received a lot of attention this spring for Fleming Island. He is a 6’3 and 245 lbs defensive end with a tremendous ceiling. Corner back Keon Jackson is a promising athlete as well. He looks like he enjoys the corner position and has worked very hard on using good technique.

It was a game of little scoring but still exhibited lots of plays. Both coaching staffs were excited to see some of the things that the teams worked on in spring practice, materialize on the game field. Menendez head coach Patrick Turner saw lots of young players on defense make plays, like sophomore Kenny Logan and Jalen Childs who both had interceptions in the game.

In the loss, Menendez Max Davis capped off the fourth interception of the evening for his team. Davis is scrappy athlete that is very versatile. He doesn’t mind mixing it up with bigger players or flying up to make a sound tackle.
Menendez was unable to get anything going on offense until the ladder minutes of the fourth. Ryan Rice scored their only touchdown late in the game. Yet Menendez has talent on the offensive side of the ball. Quarterback 2019 Darian Oxendine is a mobile quarterback who acts as another weapon on the field. He’s young, small, but explosive, and can be used effectively behind their big offensive line. In the spring, the offensive line has solidified themselves as play makers for the team. Colleges have noticed some of these individuals as well.
2017 OL Connor Robbins has received offers from these schools..
Appalachian State, Buffalo, Central Florida, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, Colorado State, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Georgia Southern, Iowa State, Marshall, Maryland, Memphis, Missouri, Pittsburgh, South Alabama, South Florida, Syracuse, Tulane.
2017 OL Zander Zadai has received an offer from Warner University.
Having a strong team in the trenches is a great attribute for a program. Menendez will work on building their offense around them. Fleming Island has athletes on the field, but with a new staff chemistry is paramount. Look for lots of summer work outs and 7 on 7 to get receivers, running backs and the quarterback on the same page. they’ve already shown this spring that they can grind out a win for the new regime.
