2016 Spring Football Recap: Nease vs Atlantic Coast

DuvalSports.com will recap all the spring football games in Northeast Florida this summer! Check out this game recap below!

It was short action between Nease and Atlantic Coast in their spring football match-up as the game ended before halftime. The score when the game was called in the 2nd quarter was Nease-7, Atlantic Coast-21. Coast scored first on a spectacular run by runningback Caleb Green. Green took the hand off and was met after a 2 yard gain by the Nease defense. But the talented running-back broke a tackle and emerged from the pile to take it 80 yards for the touchdown. Runningback Johnathan Ealy is the power back and Caleb Green is what coach calls the “wiggler” and has a change of pace.

The ensuing possession saw a Stingray interception return for a touchdown by cornerback Dennis Livers. Livers stepped in front of a Leighton Alley pass to take it 80 yards for the touchdown.

Livers is a game changer on defense that has received several offers from college. He provided a glimpse of what Atlantic Coast’s new defensive backs Coach has brought to the unit. A new flavor and aggressive play to which the defense excelled in against Nease. Holding them to 7 points.

Those seven points came on a run by Nease’s runningback Jareem Wescott. Wescott is the man now in the backfield and he has had game experience at the varsity level even as a sophomore. The Junior running back runs hard and keeps his legs driving through tackles.

His touchdown in the spring game was set up by a Leighton Alley pass to Jayson Sowden to get to first and goal. Alley is a big quarterback who has all the skills and abilities to be good at the next level. 6 foot 5, and good arm strength that wasn’t on display in the spring game because he didn’t have time time to throw. The Nease offensive line and defense needs to improve mightily over the summer. They with have good film to correct and prepare for the fall. Alley gives them optimism on offense.

Another player Nease can be optimistic about is TE Zach Sheffer. Sheffer is a big target that has great hands . He is one of the most touted Tight Ends in High School. This rising junior will be a chain mover and safety outlet for Alley. Look for them to make big plays.

Atlantic Coast Quarterback Ashton Gonzalez brought the rain again with a 60 yard touchdown pass to WR Pat Tabor, to close out the scoring 21-0. This combination looks exciting and cohesive. They will lead a Stingray passing offense that looks to make explosive plays.

Orlando Heggs, and Thomas Rush will lead the offensive line. Sprinkled in with some new guys to compliment the seniors, the Atlantic Coast offensive line is a positioned to be well equipped.

Ashton Gonzalez QB is a hard worker, smart, and a good leader. He’s got experience in stressful situations, and Tanner Watson is strong and talented. WR James Sasser and Pat Tabor are seniors returning for the Sting Rays. Trayvon Wallace is also mixed in there with the WR group.

The new DB coach brings a new flavor on defense. Changes to the scheme has the Stingrays flying around in the secondary. They remain stout in the trenches and have playmakers to make lots of plays in the backfield. It’s going to be Dennis Livers making plays in secondary, and DE Chandler Curson making them behind the line of scrimmage. The Stingray defense dominated the affair. They got after the quarterback without blitzing as their defensive line utilized their speed and power. The linebackers got down hill to fill running lanes.

Anthony Watley Interview

Nease Head Coach Tim Krause could not be pleased with his team’s effort in spring even if it was just in one and a half quarters. He will undoubtedly work to ensure that his team starts faster and plays harder from start to finish. He is certainly committed to making the Panthers a great team.

As for Coach Matt Elliot he was certainly pleased by his team’s effort. Coach Elliot is making sure that his players take the game serious, but take the experience it brings all with laughter. They have fun on the field but are fierce competitors, and that’s how his team has built camaraderie during spring practice this year.
