Spring Football Recap 2016: Westside vs Bolles

DuvalSports.com will recap all the spring football games in Northeast Florida this summer! Check out this game recap below!
Bolles and Westside played their spring football game amidst thunder clouds on the horizon, so it would be critical for each team to strike first on the field before lightning struck across the sky. Bolles would strike first, as Jaylen McCloud ran a short touchdown to go up 7-0.

McCloud can pound the rock and hit the hole, and he and the others backs ran hard and effective against Westside. The’ll look to follow 6’7 350lb left tackle Nick Lewis this fall as they did in the spring game. Just a sophomore, Lewis controlled the opposing defensive line and has a big time future with the team. The drive was directed by Quarterback Mac Jones who completed several passes but converted a crucial first down with his legs to set up the score.

Jones, a recent commit to Alabama, showed off his athleticism in the game converting a first down with his legs. He didn’t have to move much as his offensive line kept a perfect pocket for the rising senior. He displayed his strong arm and technique on several plays proving why he is one of the top recruits in the country. He would complete a long touchdown pass to RB Amari Terry showcasing his deep ball. He would then exhibit precision on short throws, as he completed a short pass to Terry who took it 60 yards for the score.

Amari Terry showed his explosiveness last year but was injured during the season. He spent the fall and winter rehabbing and strengthening himself. He is noticeably bigger but still just as fast. He had an incredible game versus Westside , scoring three touchdowns. He showed off his speed, power, quickness and hands in just two quarters of work. Look for Terry to have a monster year.

Head Coach Corky Rogers has another talented team on deck for this year. On defense, Ahman Ross leads a very opportunistic group set on making plays. The talented defensive back can play linebacker on most teams because of his size. Yet his speed allows him to excel in the defensive backfield. With several collegiate offers, Ross is poised to add more stars to his recruiting profile around the country.

It was Ross’s teammate C.J Grimes who got into action on defense, grabbing a interception in the second quarter. Look for the defense to make lots of plays with defensive end Justin Mitchell. He may be one of the biggest linemen at D-End in an undersized defensive line unit. But they have impressed the coaches with their ability to work hard in spring practice.

Westside fell behind early but responded with some very nice plays. Led by Quarterback Winston Sweeting, the Wolverines converted a first down on their first drive. Sweeting looked good on the drive. With excellent arm strength, he hit Raekwon Peterson on a strike for the first down. The 2018 Quarterback has a young team around him, but he is the perfect leader for them to grow with. Peterson and Dale George will be there to make plays for him. If they work hard this summer as they did in the spring they will turn lots of heads in the fall.

Sweeting went deep again on the drive down the right sideline. He put the ball perfectly in the hands of the receiver however the wide receiver could not hold on to it. It stalled their first drive. After Bolle’s first score, Coach Rodney Dubose put together a nice drive for the Wolverines and it capped off with a Tahveon Nicholson touchdown off the left tackle. He followed LT Tariq Hookfin who opened a gaping hole. Nicholson looked real nice, he has great speed and can really hit the hole. He will need to hit the weights this summer to remain durable for the entire season. He has the potential to put together a very nice 2016.

Westside’s defense is young and still growing, the unit is not one that will impress with their size. But they do have alot of players that fly around and make tackles. Linebacker Calvin Altman will look to rebound after suffering a car accident last year. He has all the skills to tag players on defense with his hard hitting. The unit gang tackles well but were beat on individual plays in space against Bolles. They’ll look to work on playing in space in the summer.

Bolles was without some players for the Baseball Championship game in Ft. Myers and some were down with injury, but the team didn’t miss a beat. It’s that type of togetherness that has the Bulldogs looking forward to the fall, after taking care of business in the spring. Westside accomplished exactly what they wanted to versus Bolles. They played hard and fast and measured themselves against one of the best programs in the area. Both teams can take alot away from their half of football exhibition.
