2016 Spring Football Recap: Oakleaf vs Lee

DuvalSports.com will recap all the spring football games in Northeast Florida this summer! Check out this game recap below!

One of the most exciting spring football games took place at Lee High School between the Oakleaf Knights and the Lee Generals. It started fast for Lee as a defensive interception by CB James Williams set up the General’s first score by their stud runningback Cam Wakefield. Cam is expected to have a big year this fall, and he showed in spring practice and the game that he plays big every time the shoulder pads come on.

The 7-0 lead for Lee wouldn’t last long as Oakleaf’s defense would match Lee’s forcing a turnover, and scoring their first touchdown of the day. The turnover was courtesy of CB Nick Roberts, a big time defensive back who is committed to the University of Miami. Roberts is a leader on the defense and is already laying the wood on ball carriers even before the season starts.

The key defensive play by Roberts set up a 90 yard catch and run by WR Rashaan Swain to tie the game at 7-7. Swain is deceptively fast, seemingly coasting while outrunning the entire defense. He is a big play maker for Oakleaf, and he and QB Jordan Johnson built good chemistry in the spring.

Lee wasted no time answering the score as QB Derrick Jones scored on a run showing his ability to keep the rock himself. Jones has looked good in spring and Coach Smalls knows he has an offensive weapon and a leader in him. He has love for his teammates, takes responsibility for his play on the field and in the classroom. All things you love to see at the Quarterback position.

The next player to show out in this spring shootout was Oakleaf’s wide receiver Rontrez Morgan. Morgan turned on the jets and left everyone in the dust on a 90 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Oakleaf would convert the extra point and trail Lee 15-14 in the first quarter.

It was Derrick Jones time to respond again as he connected with WR Juriel Caldwell on a nice play that gained a nice chunk of yards. Jones would once again find the endzone with his feat on a 20 yard scamper to increase the General lead. Jones looks to run behind the big man LT Demetris Harris, who is one of the best linemen in the city.

The threesome of QB Jordan Johnson, WR Rontrez Morgan, and WR Rasheen Swain have been playing football with one another since their middle school days. Now that they are in high school, that history of playing together has allowed them to build a strong cohesiveness. An example of this was when Johnson threw a pass on the money to Morgan, who did the rest. 65 yards later the Knights are in the endzone. The conversion was good and the game was tied at 21-21.

Before the half the scoring didn’t stop has Lee’s Derrick Jones scored from five yards out to put his team up. 27-21. At the start of the 3rd quarter, Lee’s #2 Vincent Davis wanted to get in on the action as he picked off Oakleaf’s Johnson. Davis is another key player on the General defense who the coaches have been raving about this spring. His pick set up a Wakefield 35 yard touchdown run, his second of the evening. And Lee led ballooned the lead to 34-21.

If you thought Oakleaf was done, you guessed wrong. Jordan Johnson hit Swain again for the touchdown, cutting their deficit to 34-27. Swain is very confident in he and his teammates ability to be great. When speaking of the air attack led by himself, Morgan and Johnson he said ” We’re the best in the city”. There’s no reason to doubt him after watching their spring performance against a good Lee defense.

It was the Derrick Jones show though, as he scored his 4th rushing touchdown, and threw another touchdown to Caldwell to put the game out of reach for Oakleaf. Oakleaf would score again, but Lee’s leader on defense Keirston Johnson’s interception capped off a great showing for him in the spring game with several tackles, and a big win for his team.

Both teams showed excellent offensive star power, something the coaches will love to break down on film. What they won’t be very excited about is the defensive efforts yielding lots of points. Still, the defenses made plays when they were there and both teams will work to get better this summer. Head Coaches Steve Reynolds and O.J Smalls both should be very eager to get back on the field again this fall. As they have many athletes to showcase when the games count.
