DuvalSports.com will recap all the spring football games in Northeast Florida this summer! Check out this game recap below!
The Fernandina Beach Pirates defeated Arlington Country Day Apaches 22-0 in spring football action. Fernadina’s Ty Herring showed why he’s a starter on offense and defense as he made several big plays in the contest. On offense, Herring scored at slot WR on a quick pop pass beating the blitz. He would outrace the Apaches defense 80 yards for the touchdown. But Ty wasn’t done on offense, he would also score on a sweep from 10 yards out showcasing his ability as a runner in addition to being a pass catcher. At 6’3 185lbs, Herring has the size to make an impact in every game. Against ACD, he also had an impact on defense at FS making tackles and also grabbing an interception and returning it deep into Apache territory. Game changers like Herring give Head Coach John Pate reason to be very enthused with the season.
Another reason the Pirates are excited is junior runningback Jordan Parker who led the rushing attack for the Pirates. With several players talented enough to tote the rock, the most gifted of them seems to be Parker. He’s able to shift and move between the tackles, and possesses the speed to take it the distance. He’s also a talented defender at defensive back. Defensive End Walter Bean is one of the Pirate defenders charged with pressuring the opposing quarterback into making untimely throws into the talented secondary. Against Country Day, he had two sacks and played the run well.
The man leading the Pirate offense in the spring was Quarterback Joe Lepone. The junior signal caller tossed a nice touchdown pass in the spring game. He’s an improviser, using his legs effectively to make things happen. He’s been working this spring and summer to become a more effective passer, the ACD game proved he’s making good progress.
Arlington Country Day looks to rebound from last season, and they must do it after losing some good players. The shut out in spring wasn’t an ideal start to the rebuilding process, but with hard work the program can make leaps and bounds in the fall.
