2016 Spring Football Recap: Bishop Kenny vs St. Augustine

DuvalSports.com will recap all the spring football games in Northeast Florida this summer! Check out this game recap below!

There is a business like approach to football at St. Augustine, equipped with team leaders, award winners and the receipt of performance expectations. It’s a good part of the reason why the Yellow Jackets took care of business against Bishop Kenny 39-0. It was the first game for Head Coach Brian Braddock as a Yellow Jacket, after leaving the Mandarin Mustangs to take the job. He has firmly placed his imprint on a club that already had a winning tradition. Not an easy task for any coach. But the first game of his career in St. Johns County proved he’s heading in the right direction.

St.Augustine jumped out early on Bishop Kenny and never looked back. Receiving touchdowns by Karim Brown, Emerson Kabus, and two from Jahquise Russell put the game out of reach before halftime. The talented Yellow Jackets showed they truly have an arsenal of weapons. And it begins with Senior RB Jahquise Russell.

Russell is one of the best backs in the state. His down hill style is complimented only by his ability to outrace defenders. This spring he learned a new offense and showed his versatility as a pass catcher as well. This 2nd team all state selection is in the drivers seat to be first team this year. His Quarterback Cole Northrup tossed several touchdowns in the spring game, showing that he can do more than just hand off to Russell, he can sling the football down the field. He connected on two long throws in a torrential down pour, extremely impressive for the Senior. He can also run well with the football when needed, using his 6’1 frame to move the chains.

Emerson Kabus is a senior to watch. His speed has increased and his confidence with it. He looks comfortable with the ball in his hands and you can expect the coaching staff to trust him in games to make a play. Karim Brown has caught the eye of scouts already entering his junior season. His score in the spring game and play in spring practice has shown everyone that he is one of those gifted athletes that comes ever so often.

The offensive line for St. Augustine will be lead by 6’3 270lb Terrance Lovett. Lovett is a big guy with a big motor for moving people. He’ll open the holes for Russell and protect Northrup. Look out for Ian Segui as well to be a major force on the line.

The defense played very well against Bishop Kenny. They didn’t allow the Crusaders to cross midfield in the first half. Points failed to come for Bishop Kenny and it was thanks in large part to the swarming yellow jackets playmakers on that side of the ball. One of the most talented playmakers on defense is DB Jacoby Feliciano. He’s got good range from sideline to sideline, covering lots of distance. He’s a leader of the team, and selected by the coaches to be one of the captains. Derek Leroy Jr, the talented defensive end will also pressure the opposing Quarterbacks making it easy for Jackets DBs like Ra’Sheen Lockwood to step in front of bad passes. The defense will look to be more opportunistic in forcing turnovers to get off the field, and allow the new fast pace offense to stay on.

Bishop Kenny may not have intended to show much in the spring game, especially seeing that the two teams must see each other again. However, it still wasn’t the outing new Head Coach Bobby Raulerson was looking for from his team.He took over for long time head coach Mark Thurson earlier this year. Thurson was elevated to Athletic Director, and will be sure to have a hands on role with his former defensive coordinator’s team. The squad went back to the drawing board this simmer to come up with unique ways to get their play makers more involved when the fall arrives. Players such as RB Dajon White will run behind, OL Josiah McCallum and big Bruce Aubley, to take pressure off of the sophomore QB Tucker Talbott. Talbott is a big young man and can use his arm strength to get the ball downfield to junior WR Aaron Fudge. Aubley and crew will have to give their young QB time and they will. Aubley was the offensive lineman of the year for BK in 2015.

On defense, DE Myles Harris showed a willingness to mix it up in the trenches. It’s that type of attitude that’s going to have to resonate with the rest of the team. The team is young at key positions but plays with an enthusiasm about them that can only infect the teammates around them. Look for a more focused team in the fall by the Crusaders.

Thanks for checking out this spring football recap. We’re down to our last two game recaps before the fall season officially starts at 12am August 1st. Don’t miss them!
