With the release of the first three weeks of the season, immediately the first game that stands out is the season opener for both teams.
Defending city champion Fletcher host former city champion Matthew Gilbert Sept. 13 at 5:30 at Jack Taylor Stadium.
The two best teams last season were clearly Fletcher and Gilbert, the two seemed destined to play in the city championship, however one wouldn’t make it.
Fletcher rolled through the 2015 season undefeated and cruised to the city championship with a win over Twin Lakes in the title game.
Gilbert (7-1) carried a 71 game winning streak into its semi-final game with Twin Lakes last season before dropping a 22-14 nail bitter at Raines.
The matchup everyone wanted to see last season didn’t happen, but as fate would have it the two were matched up in the season opener this season. Allowing fans the chance to see the match after all.
As one Gilbert coach put it, “We are reloaded and want that trophy back.”
We will see.
The drive to the city championship begins Sept. 13 for every team.
