Bartram Bears Blank Fleming Island Eagles 10-0

Bartram Trail- Austin Galbraith hit a 32 yard field goal with 9:15 left in 4th quarter, and that was all Bartram Trail needed to defeat its rival Fleming Island 10-0. In this heated defensive battle The field goal made it a two score game in a contest that barely saw any scoring on the evening.

It’s a surprise that Bartram didn’t get more offense from its unit as they came into the contest averaging 36.6 points per game. Yet it was no surprise how the Bears would score their lone touchdown. Without a shortage of Quarterbacks in the stable, Bartram’s QB Joey Smith pitched the ball to QB Joey Gatewood on half back option. Gatewood acted like he would run for a second but pulled up for the second option and tossed a TD pass to Griffin Helm for the 30 yard score.

Fleming and Bartram played outstanding defense in the game. The Golden Eagles were held their last opponent out of the end one and did their best act of dejavu against Bartram, but the Bears were to big and to talented to keep down all game. It’s clear that Bartram is trying to find unique ways to use their young stud QB who is committed to Auburn. They have more faith in Riley Smith and Joey Smith in throwing the ball right now so Gatewood lines up at receiver, running back and Quarterback, attempting to exploit mismatches. Until the players are comfortable with the system and the coaches find ways to get his best weapons on the field at the same time, the Bears will struggle to find an identity on offense. Fortunately for them, the defense handled business tonight with the shutout of Fleming. Bartram goes 1-0 in district play after the win while Fleming falls to 0-1 in district play. Bartram is 3-1 on the season while is 2-1.
