Bulldogs Pull Rank On Generals: Bolles-44 Miami Jackson-14

Jacksonville FL-  The much anticipated game between the Miami Jackson Generals and the Bolles Bulldogs of Jacksonville finally took place Friday September 23rd on the turf of George H. Hodge Field. The game, which was originally scheduled for week 2 of the high school football regular season was rescheduled to week 5 due to Hurricane Hermine’s path through the state in early September. Finally, High School Football lovers from around the state would be treated to the matchup between two powerhouse programs from opposite ends of the state.

Jackson came into the contest at 1-2 with a big week 3 win over rival Booker T Washington (AP #1 ranked team in class 4A). Their two losses were to very good teams in Columbus (2-2) and (3-0) Cardinal Gibbons. Bolles sat at 3-0 with blowout victories of Lake Mary(2-2), Lakewood(1-2) and Andrew Jackson. The Bulldogs averaged 58 points per game going into Friday’s contest against the Generals, who before last week had held their two opponents to just 15 points per game. Everyone braced themselves for a close contest, but what they got was something very different.

The Bolles Bulldogs rushed for 165 yards in the first half and nearly 400 yards in the game as they rolled over the Miami Jackson Generals 44-14. The top dog for Bolles was running back Jaylen McCloud, who rushed 32 times for 201 yards. He and his Bolles running mates pounded Jackson into submission. Four different backs carried the rock for Bolles on the night and all were effective especially McCloud. Jaylen hit the holes hard and showed burst at the goal line. He carried defenders into the endzone on his first of three scores of the evening.

For a moment it seemed like the game would live up to the hype as Jackson’s Keiron Broussard answered McCloud in electric fashion scampering 80 yards for the touchdown. The score would be tied 7-7, but that would be the last score we’d see from Jackson until the fourth quarter. Broussard would have have two touchdowns on the night.

The Bolles defense suffocated Jackson, clogging running lanes and harassing receivers. DB Ahman Ross and CJ Grimes shut down the General’s air attack. Grimes intercepted a pass in the first half, which stopped a Miami Jackson drive.

The Generals had no answer on offense, and the Bolles offense made them pay. McCloud put his team up 14-7 on a short touchdown run, followed by another short run by EJ Porter to take a two touchdown lead in the 2nd quarter.

Nolan Lepkoske added a 32 yard field goal before halftime, redeeming himself for a 45 yard miss earlier in the game, as Bolles took a commanding 24-7 halftime lead.

In the second half, Bolles put the hammer down on Jackson with more of their running game. It didn’t matter who lined up in the backfield as they would get scores from back ups QB Josiah Johnson, and RB James Omlor.

But make no mistake, it was McCloud’s night. He cemented his performance on a 25yd touchdown run late in the 4th quarter. As Bolles rolld to the 44-14 victory.

McCloud answered his critics in the game who suggested that the back wasn’t fast enough to be effective against the speed of a Miami Jackson team. Teammate Ahman Ross was also included in such criticisms, but by the end of the night McCloud’s three touchdown’s and a Ross interception all but quieted those notions.

It was truly a total team effort for Bolles, as Head Coach Corky Rogers seemed to be a step ahead of his trail blazing opponent Coach Lakatriona Brunson on the night. Brunson and staff clearly set out to stop Bolle’s most explosive weapon RB Amari Terry believing like many that he was the only speed threat on the field. They looked to harass star Quarterback Mac Jones and disrupt his timing with Terry and others. However even Jones showed that he had more to his game than meets the eye.

It was a dominating performance by the Bolles offensive line and Bulldog defense. Defenders like Kyle Coffindafer and Isaiah Morris kept the pressure up all night and were relentless in the trenches. They exploited a weakness in the General’s attack and kept at it all night. Jackson knew what was coming, but just couldn’t stop it. Bolles served notice to district rivals in the area and potential playoff opponents around the state tonight with their overpowering victory. That as long as they have their General Corky Rogers on the sidelines, they always have an advantage.
