Christ’s Church- Running back #8 D.J Lamp scored 4 touchdowns Monday Night as Christ’s Church defeated Bishop Snyder 42-6. With the win, the Christ’s Church Eagles became the SSAC North Division Champions and clinched a playoff birth for the second year in a row under Head Coach Jim Stomps. In just his second year Stomps has turned the program around, and the finished product was on display Monday night for the homecoming crowd.
“Run for more and throw to score” is his philosophy, and that ole’ Alabama boy as Coach refers to himself as, had the running game hitting on all cylinders. His hot rod was Lamp who rushed for well over 200 yards and scored 4 touchdowns in the game. Lamp had two runs of 40 yards and a longest for 60 yards in the game. Coach kept feeding him the rock and he kept churning away the yards. Lamp’s first score was an ISO off right tackle to pay dirt. He would follow his blockers for three other scores on the night, which is why he was sure to give his offensive line credit after the game.
“I couldn’t have done it without the offensive line. The line made holes and running lanes where almost ten yards down the field and there’s four guys taking people out”. – D.J Lamp Christ’s Church Runningback
His running partner #7 Johnny Gullett pounded a pitch right into the endzone also in the game as both backs found running room behind the Eagles offensive line. By the end of the first quarter, Lamp and Gullett had combined with a punt block TD by #44 T.J Strong to give Christ’s Church a 21-0 lead. Lamp added another touchdown in the 2nd quarter along with a two point conversion by #6 Josh Dennie and the lead ballooned to 29 at halftime.
Not much went right for Bishop Snyder (0-8) on the night. Christ’s Church defense simply smothered them. Linebacker T.J Strong pressured Snyder’s QB Thomas Lewis all night when he attempted to drop back and pass. When Snyder attempted to run, DT Louie Nammour was there to clog running lanes and make tackles. Nammour led Christ’s Church in tackles on defense as his name was called constantly over the loud speakers. The pressure the Eagles applied forced Bishop Snyder into bad plays and mistakes. It’s something that has plagued the Cardinals all year.
Bishop Snyder’s Thomas Lewis did score a late TD to prevent the shutout but the game was well in hand for Christ’s Church. Another thing in their hands was a SSAC North Division title, their first in school history. As runner ups last year, the Eagles have shown that they are a better team this year thanks to the hard work and dedication by the players and coaches.
They’ll enjoy the victory and the division crown but their eyes are already fixed on Ocala Christian on a short week. Their leader #13 QB Zach Baldwin went down with a knee injury in the 2nd quarter which brings concern going forward. Baldwin injured the knee last year as well missing the majority of the season. So Stomps may elect to hold him out until the playoffs even if he is cleared to play.
As for tonight, Christ’s Church will celebrate the victory and shower their coach in Gatorade for their tremendous accomplishment. They are now 5-1 on the season, undefeated at home, and undefeated in their division, whereas Bishop Snyder is the complete opposite. Void of a W on the season, big red will look to get their first win against Mount Dora Friday.
