Lake Shore takes control of the West Division

WESTSIDE-Lake Shore came into its crucial Western Division showdown with a lot of confidence and revenge on its mind.

They left with both yesterday, after knocking off host Jeff Davis 14-6 to take control of the West with one game remaining in the division.

A loss last season to Jeff Davis, kept the Warriors from winning the division and ultimately a playoff berth, the Warriors didn’t let that happen again.

Prior to the game Lake Shore assistant coaches shared with me no team had advanced past the 50-yard line on them so far, they had only given up 5 first downs and nobody had scored on them yet.

Jeff Davis not only advanced past the 50 but stopped the Warriors long scoreless streak as well.

lake-shore-4jeff-davis-3Before the game, both teams were loud and confident they would be able to knock off the other. Both ran out of their own end zones and onto their own sidelines as the game was ready to get underway. It was time for Lake Shore and Jeff Davis.

Captains met at the 50-yard line and the coin was tossed by the referee and both teams shook hands and said good luck to each other. Jeff Davis won the toss and deferred the ball to the second half giving Lake Shore the ball first.

It didn’t take long at all for Lake Shore to establish the momentum scoring in the first couple minutes of the game as Mack took a short pass and turned on the jets outracing the Chargers defense for a 55-yard touchdown reception.

Jeff Davis received the ensuing kickoff and quickly put themselves in a bad hole as on fourth down and 11 as a bad snap forced the punter to try to scramble and make a play but he was gang tackled immediately giving the Warriors the ball at the 13-yard line.

The horrible start on both defense and offense prompted the Jeff Davis coach to gather his entire team over during a timeout and yell at his team to try to get them to calm down a bit.

What he said worked as the Chargers defense responded by holding the Warriors as Michael Brannon made a leaping interception in the back of the end zone to kill a potential Warriors scoring drive.

As the clock expired after the first quarter, Lake Shore held a slim 6-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

Backed up to its own 17-yard line, Jeff Davis attempted a rare pass and it was picked off by Jaylen Smith along the left side line and returned all the way for a score putting Lake Shore ahead 14-0, after Mack ran in the ensuing two-point conversion play.

That was all the points Lake Shore would need on the day as the Warriors defense pitched a shut out in the first half and until the first play of the fourth quarter.

Lake Shore defense is ferocious and full of playmakers its no wonder they had such a long streak of scoreless quarters.

Trailing 14-0, Jeff Davis received the second half kickoff and made some obvious half time adjustments on offense essentially playing keep away by keeping the Lake Shore offense off the field.

Taking over at its own 15-yard line, the Chargers began a 84-yard drive that took the entire third quarter, as they moved down the field three yards a play.

Jeff Davis ended the third quarter on the 1-yard line, setting up a intense fourth quarter. The Chargers scored on the first play of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 14-6 with nearly 8 minutes left in the game.

The score ended the Warriors long scoreless streak as well.

A fired up and well rested Lake Shore offense took their first snap of the second half in the fourth quarter. The Warriors offense was able to burn about four minutes off the clock giving the Chargers the ball back after being stopped on a fourth and one play with under four minutes left in the game.

Trailing 14-6 with under four minute left in the game, the Chargers had to abandon the run and mix in some passes as well. Unfortunately every time they attempted a pass bad things happened.

Mack game saving interception at midfield gave the Warriors the ball back and they responded by picking up several first downs while also took advantage of a late hit out of bounds to drive inside the 10-yard line. As time was winding down, Lake Shore coaches instructed the offense to take a knee instead of trying to score to end the game as darkness fell.

After players shook hands and said good game, both teams went to their respective end zones to receive words from their coaches.

Moments after that a cool thing happen as Jeff Davis assistant coach Cedric Smith went over to the Lake Shore side of the field and congratulated the Lake  Shore coach before meeting up with his son Jaylen Smith who ironically plays for Lake Shore as well.

It was Jaylen Smith pick-six which helped put away the Chargers earlier in the game. The two exchanged hugs and posed for pictures as Jaylen rubbed the win it in a bit to his dad.

Both teams entered the day undefeated in the division,  yet only one would leave undefeated still. Lake Shore (5-0, 3-0) takes over the West Division, while Jeff Davis (3-2, 2-1) is now one game behind them and needing help to get back in the playoff race.
