Ribault Keeps District Hopes Alive on Senior Night: Defeats Yulee 14-7

Ribault High School- ” It’s not over until we say it’s over”, were the words of Ribault’s Defensive End Jaylen Joyner who’s team defeated Yulee Thursday Night 14-7. Ribualt faced elimination from playoff contention in their game versus Yulee. After losing to Suwannee two weeks ago, it was a must win for the Trojans if they wanted to have a chance to win the district and make the playoffs. So early on they played with desperation like a team with their backs against the wall.

The Trojans got started quickly as Quarterback Ryan Williams hooked up with WR Rashod Flynn on  a 42 yard touchdown pass and reception to go up 7-0. It was another quick start for the Trojan offense who have started fast in recent games. Their blast out of the gate put Yulee back on it’s heals attempting to respond, however the Horntes were unable to match the intensity of the Trojans.

Late in the second quarter Ribault RB John Singleton raced around the right end to score the game’s eventual game deciding touchdown. Singleton and RB Javon Williams led the way for the Trojan rushing attack in the game. They were able to grind out tough yards and find success on the edge of the Hornets defense. The score was 14-0 as Yulee had no answer for Ribault early.

Yulee found it hard to move the ball in the first half. However the second half showed a different story as the adjustments the Hornets enacted for halftime took shape. Yulee put their big time runningback Jamari Peacock at Quarterback in the wildcat and pounded him in consecutive plays. The ground attack gave Ribault fits and was reminiscent of Suwannee’s Quarterback Steven Anderson’s performance where he single handedly defeated the Trojans. Yulee clearly watched film of that game and felt that Peacock could provide the same affect in this game, and he did.

Yulee began to put Ribault on the ropes but strangely took Peacock out of the wildcat after he gained several first downs. Ribault would hold Yulee to 0 points in the 3rd quarter even though Yulee controlled the time of possession and moved the ball effectively. Trojan DE Jaylen Joyner would get one of his sacks on the night as he pressured Yulee QB Brandon Kline.

Ribault could not put Yulee away in the second half thanks in part to their penalties and the Yulee defense. The Hornets stopped Ribault on several second half drives which kept them in the game going into the fourth quarter. Jamari Peacock would finally score in the fourth quarter. He led a long drive in the wildcat formation capping the drive from 2 yards out. His TD brought Yulee within 7 points in the fourth.

Ribault had a chance to put the game away on offense but once again shot themselves in the foot with penalties and missed opportunities. They gave Yulee yet another chance to tie the game wit ha little over 2 minutes to play.

This time the Ribault defense would step up for the Trojans and save the day. After Kline used his legs to escape the collapsing pocket and convert two first downs, the Ribault defense would force fourth down. On fourth down and four yards to go, Kline’s pass was incomplete to his receiver and Ribault breathed a big sigh of relieve.

Ribault was bigger and faster than Yulee in this contest and that advantage was enough for the win. With the win, Ribault forced a three team playoff set for Suwannee on Monday October 31st. Ribault and Yulee will travel west and play each other for the chance to face Suwannee. One team will be the district champion and another team will be a playoff team. One will be sent home for the season.
