Lee High School ( The Back Yard)- What do you get when you pit two of the hottest teams in the area together? One word… Points! Lot’s of points!!  And when there are points scored by Lee in the backyard their cannon sounds off loud and proud. The Lee Generals defeated the Bartram Trail Bears 61-59 in one of the highest scoring affairs in High School Football history ( Clay vs Bishop Kenny 147 points in 2013)! A last minute touchdown pass by Quarterback Derrick Jones to WR Theodore Ingram with just 30 seconds to play, gave Lee an incredible 61-59 lead. It was Derrick Jone’s fourth touchdown pass of the night. The play culminated a night in which Jones etched himself into school history finishing 29 of 43 passing, with 467 yards, 5 TDs, and no INTs. He also added 25 carries for 157 yards and 4 TDs in the contest as his Generals defeated Bartram Trail to advance to the State Semifinals.

Derrick Jones Makes Mid-Season Top QB List

The game was just as wild as its ending. The reason Jones had to orchestrate a last minute drive for his team was due to the incredible play making ability of Bartram Trail. Devin Ellison ripped off an 80 yard touchdown run with under 4 minutes remaining in the game that gave the Bears a 59-47 lead that would’ve ordinarily finished any other team. But the Lee Generals were not just any other team. They’ve shown all year that that they were capable of doing incredible things and in this game they continued that trend.

The Generals built a 27-7 first half lead with incredible play from its offensive weapons. Juriel Caldwell was the recipient of Lee’s first touchdown pass to go up 7-0. Jones and Caldwell hooked up several times in the first half to make plays for the Generals. However  Ellison would quickly respond with a 65 yd touchdown run to tie the game 7-7.  A Jones short QB sneak after a 35 yard connection to Caldwell put Lee up 13-7. Jones ran his second touchdown of the game and Caldwell would catch his second touchdown of the game in the second quarter as the Generals built a big halftime lead.

Bartram Trail was not finished with their season at halftime of the third round playoff contest, and they came out like men on a mission to prove so. Their incredible late season playoff run has been spearheaded by Quarterback Joey Gatewood. The Bears have found unique ways to use him in the offense making him the ultimate weapon that defenses stay up late at night trying to scheme to stop. He quickly got the Bears on the board from the Quarterback position as he scrambled for a 20 yard touchdown cutting the General lead to 27-14

Lee would respond on a 39 yard touchdown run by Jones set up by a 27 yard catch and run by #4 Cam Wakefield. Lee went up 33-14. Joey Gatewood would match the Jones score with one of his own, this time from the runningback position. He took a swing pass from Riley Smith 80 yards for a touchdown as Bartram closed the lead to 33-21. A field goal put Bartram closer 33-24 at halftime.

Even though the Generals had put up 33 points in the first half, Bartram was very confident coming out in the second half knowing that they could comeback. Ellison confirmed these thoughts with a short touchdown run right out of the gate in the third quarter. The touchdown made the score 33-31 Lee. Unfazed by the Bears offensive surge, Lee scored on another Jones run to put them up 41-31 in the third quarter.

Bartram would used a mishandled punt recovery deep in General territory to take the lead in the game. After a Chandler Harvin 65 yard touchdown reception from Joey Gatewood made it 41-38 Lee, the botched punt allowed Ellison to score another touchdown , this time through the air and Bartram would take their first lead in the game at 4:34 minutes in the third quarter. Bartram would lead 45-41 going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, Riley Smith connected with Gatewood ( as a wide receiver) on a 45 yard touchdown pass to put them up 52-41 with 7:55 to play in the fourth. The Bartram offense completely torched the Lee secondary all game, the problem was the Generals lit up the entire Bears defense as well. Cam Wakefield’s touchdown run with 4:59 to play made it 52-46. Incredibly the Generals would score three touchdowns in just four minutes including a Derrick Jones touchdown pass to Caldwell ( his third TD reception of the game) to pull within four 59-55 with just over three minutes to play. The night would end as it started with Derrick “Noodle” Jones making magic happen on the field and making his team’s dreams come true scoring the deciding touchdown to win the game.

The final numbers in this game are completely staggering. For Lee Wide Receiver Jurial Caldwell finished with 7 catches, for 200 yards, and 3 TDs. Tyrique Thomas had 10 catches for 114 yards, and running-back Cam Wakefield rushed 22 times for 196 yards and a TD. Bartram’s Joey Gatewood put on a show  passing 11 of 13 for 159 yard and a  TD. Rushing 9 times for 92 yards and a TD, and caught 3 balls for 119 yards and  2 TDs. Devin Ellison rushed for over 100 yards and scored three touchdowns in the game. Mind blowing stats for a mind blowing game that had everyone celebrating!

Now Lee(11-1) turns their attention to (12-0) Plant ( Tampa) who defeated Viera 35-7 to advance to the State semifinals. The winner of that game will face Venice or St. Thomas Aquinas in the State Championship game.
