Ribault Wins 7th Straight Gateway Conference Championship

The Ribault Lady Trojans won their seventh straight Gateway Conference Championship this week defeating Sandalwood 89-42.

Sandalwood came into the game with two big time freshmen in guard Amari Wright and center Caitlin McGee. The Saints seemed to be a tough test for Ribault on paper. McGee scored 30 points against Terry Parker in the semifinal round, showing her impressive skills in the tournament that were on display for Landmark Middle School just a year ago.

Yet the freshman phenom could not hang with Dominant “Day Day” and the Real Deal “Re Re” in the championship.  DayNeshia  Banks or ” Day Day” as they affectionately call her (Ole Miss commit) scored 26 points, while “Re Re” Rennia Davis(Tennessee commit) scored 27 points and added 12 rebounds. Shania Edgecombe added 15 points for the Lady Trojans who once again stormed through the tournament to a championship.

It was a great week for Ribault. DayNeshia Banks was nominated for the McDonalds All American team, while Rennia Davis was selected to the team. Davis also reached a milestone for her High School career scoring her 2,000th point. But the biggest news this week might’ve come from the sidelines as Head Coach Shelia Pennick announced that she will not retire next year and will continue coaching at Ribault in 2017-2018. An 8th Gateway Championship just may have her name on it. If she achieves it, they may want to consider naming the award after her.

Congratulations to Ribault on winning the 2016-2017 Gateway Conference Championship!
