Ribault and Englewood Advance: Gateway Conference Tournament

In a spirited second round matchup of the 2016-2017 Boys Gateway Conference Championship, the Ribault Trojans hosted the First Coast Buccaneers. Ribault received a bye in the first round due to their conference record and awaited the winner of First Coast and Sandalwood. The Buccaneers would defeat the Saints 46-37 in th first round.

First Coast started their game against Ribault fast going up 13-10 at the end of the first quarter led by Owensby’s 6 points (finished with 11 points). However #1 Ribault Guard William Easton came in the second quarter and sparked a comeback with his active hands and quick feet. He sparked a 13-5 run by the Trojans who led at halftime 23-18.

In the second half Ribault pulled away. #24 Miles Wilson played extremely aggressive, finishing plays at the rim with dunks overpowering the Bucs. He finished with 15 points. Big Louis Dorsey chipped in with 14 points in the winning effort. Said Head Coach Claude Harold, “We played team ball, we committed few turnovers and we were running and gunning. Most importantly we defended well. I ask my team to keep opponents below 45 points a game and we’ll win. We did that tonight”. Ribault now moves on to face Englewood in the third round of the tournament.

Englewood was responsible for the biggest upset of the tournament so far. The Rams defeated the #1 seeded Terry Parker Braves 54-53 to advance to the third round. A 61-58 victory over Westside in the first round gave the Rams confidence heading into their second round matchup against Parker. Jalen Stevens led the way with 20 points along with guard Na’Italian Ealey who chipped in 17 points for Englewood to spark the upset.

Englewood will have their hands full with the defending Gateway Champion Ribault Trojans in the semifinals Friday, but they showed tonight that they are a different team than many may expect. “We’ve had a lot of people coming and going during the season but we finally came together as a team tonight” said Rams guard Dorian Pittman. Ribault’s Head Coach Claude Harold is one that is not taking Englewood lightly. ” Outside of Potter’s House and Providence, anybody can beat anybody in this area. Those are the only two teams that are playing at a different level right now. I have tremendous respect for what Englewood is doing over there”.
