The Northwest Classic between the Riabualt Trojans and the Raines Vikings concluded this weekend with the Raines Vikings outlasting the Trojans 19-6.
The game got off to a quick start as Ribault scored first making it 6-0. Raines quickly responded with a touchdown of it’ s own to make it 6-6. In the second quarter Raines added a score and conersion to make it 13-6 going into halftime. After halftime the third and fourth quarters were commanded by the defenses. Each team capitalized on stops and turnovers, including a fumble recovery by Raines on the Ribault five yard line, as Ribault attempted to go in and tie the ball game.
This was the closest Ribault would get to scoring again, as the Raines defense clamped down late in the fourth. The Vikings added a score with seconds left in the game to increase their advantage to 13 points, the deciding margin in the contest.
Raines was led by Linebackers Wiilliam Dailey, and Michael Pickney. The secondary also held Ribault in check all game. The defensive line played really stout although they were visibly undersized compared to Ribault.Ribault’s efforts came from the strong running and tackling of DeSean McNair.
This young man was all over the field along with a host of Trojan defenders including Leon Huey and Keyonte Zellers. The defense stepped up big time allowing Ribault to stay in the game.
TreShawn Harris was one of the key contributors to this defensive effort, sacking Raine’s quarterback for a big loss to kill their momentum after a huge turnover.
But it was not enough to stifle the talented Vikings crew. With the win Coach Wiley takes his young team into the playoffs to face the Villages, while Ribault’s great season comes to a close. Tie breaking procedures eliminated the Trojans from a playoff birth.
