Oakleaf- Oakleaf celebrated their 2016-2017 softball state championship at Zaxbys of Oakleaf this week. They were also honored by the Clay County School Board. It was the culmination of a wild ride for the lady Knights, who have made their rounds celebrating the title. It was the bottom of the 6th inning and the bases were loaded for Class 8A Softball Runner-up Wellington as they trailed 2-1 to Oakleaf. It seemed like the Lady Knights might let their remarkable season slip away, reminiscent of last year’s late playoff loss. However Oakleaf’s star pitcher Kelsey Sweatt would do what she had done all season, strike out batters. After Wellington fouled out twice, Sweatt would take down the Lady Wolverine batter, allowing Oakleaf to escape the inning with a 2-1 lead.

Oakleaf scored their first runs when Angela Agurkis drove Katie Kistler in on a line drive down the 3rd base line. Haley Willis then would bring home Agurkis on a single. It was just the fast start that the Lady Knights needed as they knew they had one of the best pitchers in the county on the mound. In the top of the 7th Oakleaf would go on a scoring run that cemented their championship. First Mika Garcia scored on a bunt by Tracey Ferguson. Alex Acevedo would bring home a run, and score a run to balloon their lead to 6-1 in the top of the 7th inning. That would be enough for Oakleaf as head coach Christina Thompson and company would defeat Wellington to become the Class 8A FHSAA Softball State Champions.
