No. 8 Ribault goes back-to-back, wins 12th state title

LAKELAND-Before they head to Knoxville and Oxford and compete head-to-head for SEC and national championships, both Day’Neshia Banks and Rennia Davis had some unfinished business to settle leading their high school team to another state title.

Davis (Tennessee) and Banks (Ole Miss) capped their senior year with their third state title in four years with a 72-31 win over St. Pete Lakewood Feb 25 at the Lakeland Center.

Davis led the team with 26 points while Banks added 18 in their final high school game of their career.

To get to the final, the Trojans (25-3) first had to get through Plantation American Heritage and had little trouble with them in a 66-37 win in the semifinals. Davis led the Trojans with 26 points and 7 steals, while Banks chipped in 24 in the win.

Since taking over the program in 2005, head coach Shelia Seymore-Pennick has led the program to her seventh Final Four appearance and third state titles in the last four years and more importantly the programs twelfth state title.

Davis was named the Gatorade Florida Player of the Year and the state’s Miss Basketball after the season becoming just the second player from Ribault to ever earn the Gatorade award.

Pennick was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 6A Girls Basketball Coach of the Year and finished second overall in the Coach of the Year state award after winning the award last season.
