Week 2 Notebook: St. Augustine, Columbia continue rivalry winning streaks

With the new playoff system in place, teams were forced to drop the cupcakes and play better competition.

Which is why Week 2 brought us more solid games, not to mention several top rivalry games were played as well. Here is a rundown of some of the top performers from Week 2 and some of the notable accomplishments.

Streaks, Trends, Notables

  • Ten wins in a row in the Battle for the Old Oaken Bucket for Columbia over arch-rival Suwannee after the 48-0 win in Live Oak. Columbia now leads the all-time series 57-23-3 and has outscored its rival 409-51 including earning its forth shutout in the recent streak.
  • St. Augustine easily won their 17th straight over county rival Menendez with a 65-14 win and now lead the all-time series 17-0.  The Jackets scored a series high 65 points in the series besting the previous high of 63 set in 2007.

Heroes

  • Riley Robbins 19 yard field goal on the final play of the game helped Ponte Vedra stun host Palatka 10-7
  • Javiel Jones hauled in a 41 yard touchdown reception, returned a kickoff 95 yards  for a score, forced a fumble on special teams, had two pass breakups and had a interception in the 28-23 win over Providence
  • Kanell Stewart hauled in two interceptions and recovered a fumble for Fort White in the 28-23 win over Providence
  • Aaron Fudge returned a punt 80 yards and hauled in a 4 yard touchdown to spark BK to the 17-7 win over Atlantic Coast
  • Tyler Huff accounted for five touchdowns, three rushing and two passing to lead Ridgeview to a 49-17 win over Creekside

  • Dewayne McBride, from Fleming Island, 107 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries
  • Ashton Wood, from Nease, 119 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries
  • Jarrem Westcott, from Nease, 149 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries
  • James Omlor, from Bolles, 119 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries
  • Connor Cline, from Bolles, 116 yards and three touchdowns on 9 carries
  • Dexter Brown, from St. Augustine, 216 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries

  • Jhaamal Marsh, from Ribault, 20 of 37 for 249 yards and one touchdown in the loss to Trinity
  • Ivory Durham IV, from Raines, 15 of 21 for 233 yards and four touchdowns in the 43-0 win over First Coast
  • Dylan Blair, from Columbia, three three touchdown passes of 50 yards or more in the 48-0 win over Suwannee
  • Noah Carter, from Baker County, tossed three touchdown passes in the 28-7 win over Ed White

Top Receivers

  • Kenneth Channelle, from Ribault, 9 catches for 112 yards in the loss to Trinity
  • Lee Graham, from Baker County, hauled in three touchdowns in the 28-7 win over Ed White

Getting Defense

  • Ryan Smenda, linebacker from Fleming Island, finished with 13 tackles, three for loss, blcoked a punt and blocked a extra point attempt
  • Lee’s defense racked up five sacks and recorded a safety in the 49-7 win over Westside
  • Glades Central Legion of Doom defense held Oakleaf tailback Keshawn King to just 37 yards on 16 carries, while also accumulating five sacks and six tackles for a loss
  • Demetrius Byrd, from Atlantic Coast, hauled in two interceptions in the loss to Bishop Kenny
  • Mike Munder, from Bishop Kenny, recorded two sacks and recovered a fumble
  • Eric Lightner, from Bishop Kenny, added two sacks and recovered a fumble

Special teams

Mason McKenney was 2 for 2 in field goals for Oakleaf in the 13-12 loss to Glades Central
