Webb Weaves Through Christian’s Defense: Trinity 22 University Christian 12

University Christian-  “O’ what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive”. This 16th century poem by Sir Walter Scott seemed to apply to the middle school contest between Trinity Christian and University Christian Tuesday night. It may have been the intent of the Trinity Christian coaching staff to deceive the University Christian defense at the start of their Tuesday night matchup when they began the game on offense with a  halfback pass. But in the end deception gave way to pure domination, and that dominant performance came from their 7th grade running back Treyaun Webb.

Webb accounted for over 200 yards of offense on the night, scoring one touchdown rushing on the ground and one through the air on a pass reception to lead Trinity Christian to victory 22-12. It was clear the moment Head Coach David Burdetsky decided to run the ball with Webb that his offense could move the ball at will. The talented former Pop Warner Oceanway and Forestview running back put on a dazzling display of athleticism in his first middle school game. He broke tackles with ease, made defenders miss, and just flat out ran the entire defense at times. A woman from the University Christian stands was overheard yelling to the Christian’s coaching staff ” Just stop #4″! Easier said than done unfortunately for the very talented University Christian squad.

UC started the game with great momentum. Quarterback Terrance Ford led the offense down the field against the Conquerors defense with bootleg passes, counter runs, and zone read plays. These misdirection plays deceived the Trinity linebackers allowing #15 Orell Grey to take a speed sweep around the right end 40 yards for the game’s first score. Trailing 6-0, Trinity attempted to hit passing plays to their wide receivers, but were plagued with several drops. Trinity also committed several penalties in the game which contributed to the offense’s struggles. Trinity’s first regular season game was cancelled so the rust obviously showed in their first contest of the season. Yet Trinity Quarterback Daniel Plummer III took control of the offense and got the ball to his play makers.

Plummer hit Webb for a 25 yard screen pass for Trinity’s first touchdown. He would then connect with #11 Xander Ross on a pass to which Ross put a wicked fake on the defender to get into the end zone. Plummer would finish the game with two touchdown passes on the night, as Trinity turned a 6-0 halftime deficit into a 14-6 third quarter advantage.

University Christian would come to within two points when running back #5 William Belton took the wildcat run up the middle for a three yard touchdown. Belton dashed for a 69 yard run earlier to set the team up in scoring position. Yet the effort wouldn’t be enough. With the score 14-12 in the fourth quarter, Webb would take a hand off, weave through the Christian’s defense, and roll for a 65 yard touchdown run to put the game out of reach.

Trinity Christian (1-0) gets their first win on the season, while University Christian (1-1) dropped their first of the year. The two private schools are touted as the best private middle school programs in the city. Prayers are with University Christian Quarterback Terrance Ford who suffered a right hand injury late in the game and was transported to the hospital.
