Week 3 Notebook: Don’t look now Ridgeview, West Nassau are 3-0

Not even Hurricane Irma could cancel football this week, as the threat moved up football one day to Thursday for nearly all First Coast area teams.

Some games were postponed or cancelled such as Duval Charter and Cedar Creek, Episcopal at Trinity Prep and St. Augustine and Ponte Vedra.

Ponte Vedra refused to move their game with St. Augustine to Thursday due to having Open House on campus and despite both teams having the same bye week Oct. 6 it is not expected to reschedule the game for the bye week.

Streaks, Trends, Notables

  • Behind an option based offense, West Nassau is 3-0 on the season and looking like a playoff contender so far behind a defense which has posted three consecutive shutouts to start the season.
  • Don’t look now but that 18 game losing streak is now a distant memory as Ridgeview has started 3-0 for just the second time in school history.
  • It took three weeks, but first year coach Rodney Gnatt got his first ever coaching win with a 34-20 win over North Florida Educational Institute.
  • Where is the paddle ? Is what Demetric Jackson had to be saying following his teams 49-0 pounding of arch-rival Santa Fe. The resume of the once annual rivalry for the first time since 2012, continues to be one sided as the Indians have now 9 in a row in the series and 11 of the 14 all-time meetings. The Mayor of Fort White, coach Jackson is a perfect 6-0 against his arch-rival since taking over in 2008.
  • Stanton and Paxon have both been open for over 50 years and have never made the playoffs, the streak might be in jeopardy this season as both are 5-1 combined so far.

Heroes

  • Sophomore wide receiver Denall Lindo continues to be a consistent playmaker for Ridgeview coming up with another huge game. Lindo accounted for 148 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns in the win over Westside. Lindo haueld in touchdown catches covering 43 and 55 yards while also running 42 yards for another score.
  • Junior athlete Tahveon Nicholson came up huge for Lee running for a touchdown, catching a touchdown and hauling in a interception on defense.
  • With the game on the line, Bishop Kenny linebacker Michael Munder and Ridge Abinsay combined to stuff Jareem Westscott on a two-point conversion attempt to preserve the 21-20 win over Nease.
