SOUTHSIDE – University Christian rebounded from a tough loss last week with a 35-7 win over visiting Lake Butler Middle Tuesday night at Christians field.
Not only did they take an ‘L’ on the scoreboard last week to Trinity; but they also took a loss at a key position, quarterback as Terrance Ford suffered a severe hand injury late in that contest.
Ford showed incredibly toughness as a leader and play maker. Even in injury, Ford was determined to walk off the field by himself with no help. That type of leadership and toughness can be a hard asset to replace for a football team.
Yet head coach Matt Thomas relied on his other leaders on the team to rally the troops and provide the toughness and tenacity they lost from their signal caller. It was a tall order at first, “We seemed not motivated but got it done when we needed to” said coach Thomas, after the win over Lake Butler.

Any change in leadership takes time to mesh and jell, and U.C. had a big change to overcome. At quarterback, underclassman Larry Edwards stepped in and made plays with his arm and his legs. He bought time with his legs and tossed touchdowns with his arm. The team is very confident in him, and knows what he is able to do on the field.
The long limbed play maker is certainly raw and has a long way to go to meet the expectations of the coaching staff. But he has all the intangibles to be an elite player for U.C. He joins the ranks of their elite touchdown makers like Author Fatz Walker, Orell Gray, William Belton, Jakob Merhout, Kyree Hammonds and Trey Rose, as players that are sure to lead the Christians to victory each week.
It was the big tight end Rose who caught multiple touchdowns for UC in the win over Lake Butler, ensuring that the Christians bounced back in true resurrection style.

University Christian (2-1) faces Gamble Rogers (4-0) next week, which is sure to be a game of epic proportions! Both teams played last year with the Stingrays coming out on top. That was a very different U.C. team and we’ll see how it plays out next week. Check it out right here on DuvalSports.com
