JULINGTON CREEK – Inspired by seeing their teammate Jacob Shedlin back on the sideline, the Fruit Cove Flyers went out and easily handed Sebastian a 50-0 loss.
After the win over Murray a few weeks ago, the Flyers signed a game ball and head coach JC Calhoun personally took to Shedlin that night. The Flyers also wore a sticker with 20 on their back of their helmet to honor their teammate.
Shedlin, who was hospitalized with a brain tumor, was released two weeks early and on the sideline to watch his team get the win. He also led the team on the field prior to the game as well.
Early on the Flyers struggled with the winless Sebastian Eagles but looked to their teammate for inspiration before putting it away finally.
With starting quarterback Garrett Stewart sideline with a illness, the Flyers turned to Mana Wilhelm to lead the offense.
Wilhelm scored on a quarterback sneak in the first quarter to give the Flyers an early 7-0 lead after kicker Diego Rivera added the extra point.
Early in the second quarter, Wilhelm connected with Paul Wood for a 26 yard touchdown to increase the lead to 14-0.
Vincent Approbato tackled the Eagles in the end zone for a safety a few plays later for a 16-0 lead.
Wilhelm added a 9 yard touchdown run and then connected with Approbato for a 27 yard strike to give the Flyers a 29-0 lead.
Ashton Anderson made an unbelievable athletic play on defense catching a fumble in mid air and returning it 27 yards for another score and 36-0 lead.
Ryan Brummell leveled the tailback and caused the fumble which shot up in the air and into the hands of Anderson. Brummell then made another jarring hit on the ensuing kick off causing fans on both sides to get excited.
Fruit Cove went into the half with a 36-0 halftime lead and full of momentum after a 29 point second quarter. Calhoun pulled nearly all of his starters in the second half with the exception of Wilhelm as their was no other quarterback to play.
Landon Frazier’s 40 yard touchdown run was called back for holding, however on the ensuing play Wilhelm hit Preston Stope on a 50 yard swing pass for a score and 43-0 lead.
Frazier found the end zone late in the fourth quarter on a 11 yard run capping the 50-0 win for the Flyers.
Landrum 6, Patriot Oaks 0
JULINGTON CREEK – In a battle of a pair of one win teams, a first quarter score was good enough for Landrum to get their second win of the season.
Landrum received the opening kickoff and marched down the field quickly as Mason Flowers rumbled 27 yards on the first play of scrimmage.
Flowers connected with Colin Nettles down to the 8-yard line and Flowers appeared to have scored on a 8 yard keeper on the ensuing play, but the Lions were flagged for holding. Patriot Oaks defense held the Lions on fourth and goal to keep the Lions from scoring.
A quick three and out by the Lions defense along with a short punt by the Chargers put the Lions in striking distance again.
Eli Bradley found Flowers wide open for a 20 yard touchdown completion to give the Lions a 6-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter.
The Chargers defense led by safety Anthony Akel kept them in the game forcing several stops through out the night and the Lions out of the end zone in the second half.
Patriot Oaks had no problem moving up and down the field all night behind tailbacks Keaton Thomas and Sharif Denson, they just couldn’t punch it in when they needed to.
Just before half, the Chargers put together a nice drive down to the 15-yard line before turning it over on downs after being stopped on fourth down.
Late in the game with about four minutes to go, the Chargers drove down the field and appeared on its way of potentially tying the game, however Nathan Bunhosky picked off the Chargers pass at the 20-yard line to stop the drive.
