Green Cove, Wilkinson can wrap up division titles

OAKLEAF – As we reach the final week of divisional play, six of the eight teams in the North East Florida Athletic Conference (NEFAC) remain in contention for the division title and the two spots in the championship game.

What we do know is that if both Green Cove and Wilkinson win tomorrow they both win their respective divisions and play each other Oct. 24 for the NEFAC championship. However, if they both lose, things get a little more complicated in each division.

The night starts with a pair of 5 p.m. games featuring Bradford (2-2, 1-1) at Wilkinson (3-1, 2-0) and Keystone Heights (1-2, 0-2) at Lake Asbury (3-1, 1-1); followed by a pair of 6 p.m games featuring Green Cove (3-1, 2-0) at Oakleaf (2-2, 1-1) and Lakeside (0-4, 0-2) vs Orange Park (1-3, 1-1) at Orange Park High.

Both Lakeside and Keystone Heights have been eliminated from winning their respective divisions but could play spoilers with wins.

The defending North and South division champions Oakleaf and Lake Asbury enter the night with different game plans.

After an 0-2 start, the defending county and conference champions Oakleaf Yellow Jackets have rebounded to win two in a row and now faces a winner take all game at home with Green Cove for the divisional title. However, a win over Green Cove doesn’t officially give the Jackets the title yet. Having lost to Orange Park earlier, they need a Lakeside win over Orange Park to avoid a three-way tie.

Lake Asbury has won two in a row also and needs a win over Keystone coupled with a Bradford win over Wilkinson to remain in the race. Having split with Bradford (win) and Wilkinson (lost), the Tigers will be rooting for the Tornadoes.
