BOLLES – The mark of a great coaching staff is to identify the opposing teams weakness and immediately attack it repeatedly until they prove they can stop it.
University Christian coaches knew Bolles couldn’t cover Kyree Hammonds and the Christians made them pay for it.
Hammonds hauled in three touchdowns (82, 50, 22) exposing the opposing short cornerbacks in a 31-12 win over the Bulldogs.
The offensive line consisting of left tackle Jakob Merhout, left guard Robby Johnson, center Noah Clark, right guard Christian Ruzzo and right tackle Ben Roberts gave quarterback Larry Edwards plenty of protection and also provided big holes for tailback Orel Grey to run through.
Grey’s 60-yard run gave the Christians an early 6-0 lead barely three minutes into the game.
Edwards connected with a streaking Hammonds for a 82 yard touchdown completion giving the Christians a 12-0 lead with 1:39 left in the first quarter.
Two plays later, the Christians recovered a Bolles fumble and immediately took advantage of it. Grey appeared to have scored on a 11 yard run but it was called back for holding.
Several plays later, Edwards found Grey for a 21 yard strike on fourth and goal for a 19-0 lead with 6:50 left till halftime.
Edwards found Hammonds again on a 50 yard touchdown completion for a 25-6 lead with 1:20 left till halftime.
Grey made a tenacious hit on the ensuing kickoff drawing lots of cheers from the U.C. sideline.
Edwards hooked up with Hammonds for a third time with a 54 yard toss putting U.C. ahead 31-12 with under a minute left in the third quarter.
Hammonds and Peyton Penland sealed the win with interceptions late in the game.
