Providence reclaims top spot in area baseball rankings

We are reaching near the end of the regular season as the playoffs are quickly approaching this month. Teams make their final push towards winning the district tournament and securing a playoff berth.

Here is our third installment of area baseball rankings. We have a new leader now after previous No. 1 Bolles split a two game series with district rival Suwannee, allowing Providence to regain the top spot.

Week 3 rankings

1 Providence (19-2)

Why: A 3-0 week for the Stallions, which included district wins over Duval Charter 11-6, Interlachen 10-0 and Baldwin 14-0, helped propel them into first place in District 2-4A, with a huge road showdown with Trinity looming on Friday for the top seed in the district.

2 Bolles (15-3)

Why: A huge let down for the Bulldogs this week splitting a pair of district games (4-2, 0-10) with Suwannee, including a shocking 10-0 loss at home after winning the prestigious IMG Spring Break Tournament the previous week.

3 Ridgeview (13-3)

Why: The hottest team in the area continues to win, sweeping a pair of critical district games with nemesis Ponte Vedra 11-1 and 5-0 to extend their winning streak to 11 in a row. A key reason for the streak is a pitching staff that hasn’t allowed more than 2 runs in a game in over a month.

4 Trinity (12-5)

Why: The Conquerors move up after a 2-2 performance in the Desert Classic at Bishop Gorman last week in Las Vegas, with wins over West Jordan (Utah) 6-2 and Vauxhall (Canada) 6-5, before falling 10-0 to host Bishop Gorman and 2-1 to Desert Oasis in the semifinals.

5 Creekside (13-3)

Why: Knights went 2-1 on the week after wins over Atlantic Coast 12-7 and 9A Palm Coast 3-1 sandwiched in between a 5-4 loss to Archer (GA).

6 Bishop Kenny (12-4)

Why: Kenny went on the road to Tampa and swept a pair of games over solid clubs Jesuit 12-3 and Berkeley Prep 4-3 in 8 innings to rise to No. 6 this week.

7 Stanton (11-4)

Why: Two more district wins this week for the Blue Devils sweeping Wolfson 9-4 and 10-1 to secure the top seed in the upcoming District 3-6A tournament.

8 Terry Parker (15-3)

Why: The Braves keep chasing the Devils as well as Paxon in the District 3-6A race and have won 7 in a row since splitting the series with Stanton including a pair of wins over White 5-0 and 1-0 this week.

9 Mandarin (13-4)

Why: It was a short week for the Mustangs but they secured the No. 1 seed in District 1-9A sweeping Sandalwood 3-1 and 5-1 in a pair of games this week.

10 Clay (13-5)

Why: Quietly the Blue Devils have been going about their business winning 9 of their last 10 games, including a sweep of Menendez 3-1 and 13-1 to move into a tie with Ridgeview for control of District 4-6A. Speaking of which the two play Thursday and Friday in what will likely decide the district.

Dropped out: No. 3 Ponte Vedra (11-6)
