JACKSONVILLE -Led by a national record setting 4×100 relay team, Oakleaf finished second at the North Florida Middle School Meet April 14 at Episcopal.
The Yellow Jackets finished second in girls and third in boys both behind Suwannee, which won both team titles easily.
The 4×100 relay team featuring Tamira Briley, Ariana Eason, Kyah Shannon and Vivica Fitzgerald ran a 50.62 to not only win the event going away but set a new national record, ahead of Hickory Ridge Middle, who had the previous record with a 50.71. The foursome won the event two seconds ahead of Suwannee, three seconds ahead of Lake City and five seconds ahead of both Providence and Bolles.
Shannon also won the 200 with a time of 26.49 nudging out Niya Reed from Mayport, who ran a 26.75 to finish second while teammate Eason was third with a 26.94.
Eason (12.99) and Shannon (13.06) went 1-2 in the 100 dash to pick up 16 valuable points for the Yellow Jackets.
Other top finishes for the Yellow Jackets were: Naiomi Hereim (1:04.64) second in the 400, Sierra Barrera (2:41.88) fifth in the 800, Shannon (32-03) and Briley (31-05) who finished second and third in the triple jump, Adriauna Daniels (77-07) and Adrionna Coleman (62-01), who finished second and sixth in the discus and second and fourth in the shot put.
Suwannee won the boys title with 223 points, well ahead of Bolles (70), Oakleaf (53), Providence (52), KIPP (51) and host Episcopal (50).
The girls made a clean sweep winning the title with 171.5 points, well ahead of Oakleaf (91), Episcopal (66), 4 Bolles (55.5), Saint Paul’s (35) and Providence (29).
The annual middle school championships features teams from all over the First Coast area including Duval, Clay, St. Johns, Flagler, Columbia and Suwannee counties.
