Trinity Earns Win Over Lee in Spring Game

WESTSIDE – Running back Marcus Crowley rushed for two touchdowns, including a one yard plunge with just seconds remaining in the third quarter to lead host Trinity Christian over Lee 21-20. The fourth period saw mostly freshman and reserves get playing time as Lee pulled to within one point after a Ralph Mency touchdown. However the Generals failed on the two point  conversion, and Trinity ran out the clock to get the one point victory.

The game kicked off the 2018 spring football campaign in Northeast Florida, and fittingly one of the areas youngest stars was the one to provide the spark. Halfway through the first quarter, Lee’s rising sophomore running back #8 Kevonte Doles took a hand off up the gut for an explosive 38 yard run to score the first points of the game, and the spring football season.

Doles is one of several young guns that the Generals plan to utilize next year. Losing 27 seniors, one would think that Coach O.J Small  and his staff would be in a rebuilding year. However players like Doles has proven that Lee is not rebuilding but reloading. Doles gave Lee a 7-0 lead after the successful point after touchdown.

Yet it would not take long for Trinity Christian to respond. On the ensuring drive, Conquerors quarterback JaCory Jordan dropped back to pass and threw a beautiful ball deep down the left sideline hitting wide receiver Isaiah Washington in stride for the touchdown. Jordan was able to find his go to receiver and capitalize on the man to man coverage Lee played on Washington. It proved to be a mistake, as Washington blew past his man for the easy score tying the game at seven all.

The first half saw big plays on both sides by big time players. Washington may be the best wide receiver in the area going into the fall. Jordan, a freshman, showed the ability to throw the deep ball and use his legs when needed. Yet first half plays weren’t just made by touchdown makers. In fact, it was the defense that ruled the first half as both units made plays to keep points off the board. Trinity’s defensive back Fred Davis intercepted a tipped Cameron Sapp pass on the first drive of the game, to give his team the ball in prime position.

Yet the Generals defensive unit came to play as well. Led by their linebackers and secondary, they played really fast and physical.  Trevor James would set the tone for the defense, rocking ball carriers with bone crushing tackles along with linebacker Dedrick Smith. Their gang tackling forced Trinity to attempt a field goal in the red zone to which the Conquerors missed on their first drive.

Lee would return the favor when late in the first half while driving into Trinity territory, Conquerors defensive back Miles Brooks would intercept a pass to end the first half of play with both teams tied 7-7.

The third quarter saw both teams attempt to establish their identities by relying on their leaders. For Trinity it was Crowley who got the call early and often in the second half. His 22-yard scamper up the middle set up first and goal from the 5-yard line. Three plays later Crowley would plow his way into the end zone giving Trinity a 14-7 advantage.

Now it would be time for Lee to rely on their leaders, which meant putting the balls in the hands of quarterback Cameron Sapp. Sapp directed the Generals offense down field with a big first down run and a hand off to Taz Nicholson for a big gainer.

On the next play Sapp would drop back and feel the rush from his back side, reverse field and roll out to his left, square his shoulders and hit Juriel Caldwell 31 yards in the end zone for a touchdown.

The spectacular play showcased why Lee will be fun to watch on offense this year with top wide receiver Juriel Caldwell returning as well as Sapp transferring over from Terry Parker. Nicholson provided a much needed weapon last year and will look to be used in various roles this year for the team.

Overall, the spring game revealed a lot about the talent each team has to offer, even though both teams look very different than they did in 2017. Probably the most surprising difference is the appearance of Trinity running back Treyaunn Webb. Webb is a seventh grader, who recently was offered a football scholarship by the University of Miami and Valdosta State.

Webb was second on the team in carries, and gained the coaches trust to carry the rock in the game.

“We were really just trying to gel on offense, find a quarterback, we played a ninth grader tonight, but we got out without any injuries,” Trinity head coach Verlon Dorminey.

For Coach Small, spring revealed much to him as well for the Lee Generals saying, ” I’ve seen a lot of effort and growth since last year and I’m excited about the team.”
