DANA POINT, CALIFORNIA – The University of North Florida surf team travels to Dana Point, California this weekend to compete in the National Scholastic Surfing Association championships.
UNF’s surf team has qualified for the NSSA championships for four consecutive years after winning the East Coast Regional for the fourth consecutive year.
Falling short the past three years, the team hopes to finally bring home the elusive first place trophy.
The west coast typically dominates the competition every year. If an east coast team such as UNF wins the competition, it would be a first.
Only 10 out of about 200 members of the surf team are attending the NSSA championship representing the Ospreys.
They have slowly been chopping away at west coast schools as UNF has finished in second place at the NSSA championship the last three years.
Winning the East Coast Regional in New Smyrna Beach Inlet in April has advanced them to the national championships where they will look to make history.
The NSSA championship will take place June 18 in Dana Point, California. Since the team is a club sport, they have to fundraise to travel to competitions.
The Ospreys have a GoFundMe account that will be open until the end of the tournament for anyone that would like to support our local team.
