Summer Breeze With Kaley: Q/A with Sandalwood’s Adam Geis

Head football coach at Sandalwood High School, Adam Geis, and his team are hungry for the upcoming season. They hope to return to the playoffs as they have 6 out of the last 7 years.

When Geis received the job as head coach in 2002-2003, the team went 2-7 in his first year with the program. The following two years, they made the third round of the playoffs and the next year, the second round.

“We had it going there for a while,” Geis says.

The football program is averaging 4 to 5 Division 1-A college athletes that come out of Sandalwood per year under Geis as well as averaging eight wins per season.

“When you look at us compared to other schools in the area, I think we do really well,” Geis says.

For the upcoming year, Antonio Clary has aleady committed to the University of Virginia.

His realistic goal for the upcoming season is to go back to the playoffs and fight. Unrealistically, a state championship would be the ultimate goal but with the amount of talent in 8A, it is difficult. There is no easy path in the 8A playoffs, Geis says. To make it to the playoffs and compete is a war.

Their summer workouts this year consist of going hard three days a week on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 3-3.5 hours per day and they always get the weekends off.

His main expectation from his players is that they show up, listen and work hard during the summer for the upcoming season.

Coach Geis can usually predict how their season will turn out by the amount of effort being put in during the summer.

Concerning the teams’ strengths and weaknesses for the 2018-2019 season, “I really don’t feel like we have two many weaknesses for the upcoming season,” Geis says.

In order to prepare the potential athletes for college, Geis always stays on top of their grades.

“We make sure the students are in the right classes from day one,” Geis says.

Taking the SAT and ACT early and multiple times is important in preparing them to be college student athletes.
