Semifinal rematches highlight schedules

JULINGTON CREEK – St. Johns County fans won’t have to wait long to figure out who the top dog is this season.
As last year’s semifinalists will square off Week 1 to open the 2018 season according to St. Johns Middle School Athletic Association, who released its 2018 football schedules today.
The highlight of the nine week schedule is opening week, which features rematches August 22 between Fruit Cove and Swiss Point as well as Gamble Rogers and Liberty Pines in a doubleheader at Plantation Park.
Other opening games around the county include: Valley Ridge and Patriot Oaks, Landrum at Pacetti Bay and Sebastian and Murray.
The defending county champions Gamble Rogers will open the season on the road back-to-back weeks traveling Aug. 29 to Sebastian.
“We are excited, we have a lot of tough teams early on, ” Gamble Rogers coach Matt Potak said. “After seeing the spring games I think we have a lot of great teams this season throughout the county.”
One noticeable change from last season is all games will played on Wednesdays this year instead of splitting games on both Wednesdays and Thursdays.
The rematch of the 2017 title game between Gamble Rogers and Swiss Point is Oct. 3 at Plantation Park.
At the conclusion of the nine week schedule the top six teams will move on to the playoffs.
Seeds three-six will play quarterfinal games Oct. 24, the semifinals will be Nov. 1 and the championship game will be Nov. 8 all at Plantation Park.
