Hot Topics at the 2018 Baker’s Sports High School Media Day

TIAA Bank Field- It seemed like just yesterday when the Raines Vikings were hoisting the FHSAA Class 4A State Championship trophy at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. Fast forward nine months, as a new class of athletes are ready to reach for the ring. It starts with teams, and there were plenty of teams represented at the 2018 Baker’s Sports High School Media Day. DuvalSports.com will do a preview on each team complete with full interviews from media day in the coming days. In the meantime, check out some of the hot topics discussed at media day from our DuvalSports.com team.

Raines Vikings: Raines came into Media Day dawning their Class 4A State Championship rings. Coach Deran Wiley allowed his team to make the rounds of media day while he attempted to let them have the spot light. No chance of that happening. Especially considering that the former Florida Dairy Farmers Coach of the Year was fresh off winning a state title. Only the second public school Head Coach in Duval County to do so.

Quote of the Day: Running back Brandon Marshall asked how long they were allowed to celebrate the championship. ” He (Coach Wiley) let us enjoy it for about a week and a half and it was right back to work after that we got right back to work in the weight room and on the field”.

Fletcher Senators:  Play makers across the board for the Senators, and they were there at Media Day!

Quote of the Day: Safety Jalen Mitchell ” We have alot of young players but they’re playmakers who everyone sleeping on but who we have right now including who’s here , we are going to be good”.

Paxon Eagles: Paxon brought a lot of height to media day. All their players were over 6’0 feet tall

Brian Massey Wide Receiver “I really want to shoot for the playoffs, but for right now we’re going to stay humble and build a name for our school”

Bartram Trail went all the way to the Class 7A State championship game. They return some key elements to the team as Coach Sutherland chose latin to motivate the team. ” Semper Virtus” It means Always Excellence!

North Florida Educational Institute: Former Ribault Wide Receiver and Auburn standout Silas Daniels takes over as the signal caller for NFEI.

Daniels” We just want the players to have fun and enjoy the game. You’ve got to love the game”

It was a tough year for Fleming Island off the field. They lost two football players within the year, but the Coaches saw the players grow up before their eyes.

Wholesale changes at Englewood from the way they practice to the way they prepare. Coach Stalvey is excited about his speed and brought them to media day to flash their potential.

Trinity never ducks action, and the talk of media was an apparent referee scrimmage that was changed which originally pitted the Conquers against Sandalwood on August 11th. Loaded with blue chip talent again, Trinity will once again be the team to beat in the area.

Baker County came with lots of enthusiasm and eagerness to talk about their historic season last year and how that can help them this year.

The Potato Bowl was on the mind of Matanzas as they look to get the trophy back from Flagler Palm Coast. Lots of talking between the two schools builds for an exciting year and matchup.

First Coast has some new players from the spring and is confident that even with their young roster, they can make serious strides in the “W” column.

” Next man up mentality” was the quote of the day from Atlantic Coast, who looks to plug and play after losing some of their best players in the summer to transfers. Coach Jimmy Hill will certainly have them ready to play in his second season.

Bolles knows they have something to prove after losing a heart breaker to Trinity last year in the playoffs. Their play maker Chris Sanders commented how its a business approach for them this year.

The Saints responded to the Media Day hype which surfaced on twitter earlier in the week about them allegedly not wanting to scrimmage Trinity.  Antonio Clary ” I was ready to play them, no matter whether its Trinity, Menendez, or whoever. I don’t get into all that, I’ll play whoever whenever”.

Coach OJ Small has turned Lee into a powerhouse and everyone around the city knows it. Lee had the greatest number of kids from our Middle School Top 50 event state they would become Generals. The play makers he brought with him to media day will be some of the best at their positions in the city.

Kevin Sullivan has maybe his most talented team since joining the Commanders three years ago. He brought some of his defensive standouts with him to media day
