Defending county champions Gamble Rogers improved to 2-0 on the season with a 30-0 win over Sebastian. The Stingrays were led by another shutout on the defensive side of the ball.
“We are improving in all phases right now,” Stingrays head coach Matt Potak. “We just have to keep working hard and pushing ourselves. I’m very proud of the team. These young men are great examples to the community both on and off the field.”
The Stingrays began the game with a 12 play, 80 yard drive that was capped off with a 9-yard touchdown run from tailback Zander Martin to give the Stingrays a quick 7-0 lead.
Two series later, quarterback Noah Lawless scored on a 11 yard touchdown run to put Gamble Rogers ahead 14-0. Lawless, a converted linebacker, connected on several big passes to tightend Frankie Morabito and wide receiver Tomas Jones.
“The passing game looked good tonight,” said Potak. “Noah made some great throws.”
Lawless was able to connect on a 21 yard pass to Morabito early in the second half, it was Morabito first touchdown as a Stingray.
“Frankie (Morabito) did a great job,” Potak said. “He’s a two-way player and really stepped up on the offensive side of the ball tonight.”
The Stingrays closed out the scoring midway through the third quarter when Jones scored on a short touchdown run. Jones, a three-year Stingray player, lined up a multiple positions throughout the evening.
Kani Harris ran in the final conversion for the Stingrays for the 30-0 win.
Defensively it was another shut out win for defensive coordinator Ron Evans crew. The Stingrays have not given up a point this entire season, including the spring game, kickoff classic and two regular season games.
“Our defensive coaches have the boys ready for every play,” Potak said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the entire defense, they play fast and physical.”
Potak also praised the offensive line and younger players that made key contributions to the win.
“It was a total team win. Every single player on this team has contributed to the early success,” Potak stated. “Now its time to start prepping for Patriot Oaks.”
Despite the loss, Potak added the Sebastian Eagles under first year coach Austin Lee played a hard fought game and forced two turnovers and had several long drives.
“Sebastian played tough,” Potak said. “They have a great group of kids and I respect them a lot. Coach Austin and his staff will get them going.”
