Week 3: Lake Asbury keeps Battle of Cats trophy with win

ORANGE PARK – Lake Asbury jumped on host Orange Park quickly and never looked back in a 60-18 win Tuesday night at Hoyt B Cotney Stadium.

One particular player who single handedly took down Orange Park literally by himself was eight grader Sam Singleton. Singleton  accounted for four touchdowns and also two interceptions in the win.

Singleton’s 52 yard scamper on the first drive of the game gave the Tigers a quick 8-0 lead, a lead they would continue to build on through out the night. A 38 yard score and a 2 yard plunge both by Singleton gave Oakleaf a 24-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

JoJo Restall put Orange Park on the scoreboard finally with a 44 yard run cutting the lead to 24-6 with 5:49 left till half.

Restall struck again on its ensuing drive as Restall broke free for a 31 yard scamper cutting the lead to 24-12 with 4:07 left till half.

Singleton picked off Elijah Craggette pass and returned it all the way back 45 yards for his fourth touchdown of the first half and 32-12 lead with 1:12 left till half.

On the ensuing play, Singleton picked off Craggette again nearly falling out of bounds to give the Tigers the ball near midfield.

He wasn’t the only one having a good day, as quarterback Bryce Hampton also had a field day against the Wildcats. Hampton rumbled 45 yards on the next play after the interception down the left sideline to give Lake Asbyury a 40-12 half time lead.

Hampton struck again in the third quarter taking a keeper 58 yards to give Lake Asbury a 46-12 lead with 6:41 left in the third quarter.

Myrick Durionte’s 8 yard scamper cut the lead to 46-18 just 27 seconds after Hampton score.

Jhace Edwards 32 yard run made it 54-18 at the end of the third quarter, while Wright Abraham ended the scoring with a 1 yard plunge with two minutes remaining in the game.

Singleton talked about his performance and the teams big win as well as looking ahead to next weeks big game with Oakleaf.

The win allows Lake Asbury to hold on to the Battle of the Cats trophy for another year for at least the third consecutive year in the annual meeting between the Wildcats and Tigers.

Wide receiver Jeremiah Shack, tailback Devin Outlaw and quarterback Drew Ammon continue to lead the Oakleaf Yellow Jackets each week.

Shack and Ammon hooked up for a score, Ammon ran one in and Outlaw ran one in for the Jackets in the win.

“We didn’t play our best game, however we needed some adversity with us going into the meat of our schedule,” Oakleaf coach Merlin Smith said.

Oakleaf (3-0) host Lake Asbury next week before finishing up North Divisional play with road games at Lakeside (Sept. 25) and Baker County (Oct 2) the next few weeks.

After 20 minutes of intense and physical play, Mother Nature interfered with the ending of the game forcing both teams to vacate the field thanks to lightning. After much discussion officials and coaches agree to end the game with 3:46 remaining in the game in a scoreless tie.

Green Cove 16, Lakeside 14

After two straight losses to open the season, host Green Cove (1-2) finally got their first win of the season with a 16-14 win over visiting Lakeside.
