ST. AUGUSTINE – There won’t be a undefeated showdown today like everyone had hoped for between Murray and Gamble Rogers, as Fruit Cove spoiled the battle of unbeaten’s with a stunning 22-16 win last week over host Gamble Rogers.
Murray had their hands full as well with Patriot Oaks before the Bulldogs held off the Patriots 14-12 to remain the lone undefeated team in St. Johns County.
Perhaps both were caught looking ahead to todays huge showdown between the top two teams in the league, whatever the case may be todays game is still a big one.
The winner for now claims the top seed in the county with two weeks left in the regular season.
Gamble Rogers coach Matt Potak reminded his team the goal is still there, but not being the top seed is kind of a good thing as evident of the last three county champions.
Last year, the Stingrays were the No. 2 seed heading into the playoffs with a 8-1 regular season record and ended up winning the title with a win over Swiss Point. Two years ago, Swiss Point was the No. 3 seed with a 6-2 record and dominated the playoffs and won the championship and three years ago, Sebastian was the No. 4 seed with a 5-4 overall record and hit their stride late in the season to close out the season winning the county title.
His bottom line to his players last week was let’s just get into the playoffs. Championships can be won and it doesn’t matter what seed!
Murray is the only team in the county that has clinched a playoff spot going into the day, while both Gamble Rogers and Landrum can wrap up playoff berths with wins today.
