WESTSIDE – Despite a heavy loss of graduated seniors, Old Plank Christian is on pace to get back to the state title again.
The Defenders (5-0, 5-0) are tied at the top of the Region I 8-man football standings with Vero Beach Masters Academy (5-0, 4-0).
Ironically, the two play each other at Old Plank today at 4 p.m. with the winner taking the lead in the region standings.
The two have one common opponent in First Coast Christian, Old Plank defeated FCCA 69-6, while Masters Academy won 57-0.
Last season, the Defenders (8-1) advanced all the way to the state finals before losing to Academy at the Lakes 30-9 in the title game.
The top six teams from each region made the playoffs last season, with how teams finish in the regular season determining where you are seeded. The brackets are then criss-crossed meaning you play a team in the other region and its possible you can play a team from your own region for the state title.
Every team in Region I plays each other once for nine regional games with the winner getting one of the top two seeds.
Region I is comprised of local teams Old Plank, Duval Charter, Harvest Community, Seacoast Christian, Cornerstone Christian, First Coast Christian and First Baptist Christian out of Palm Coast along with Vero Beach Masters Academy, Orlando Eastland Christian and Kissimmee City of Life Christian.
