Saints Seniors End Season With Heated Win Over Atlantic Coast

SOUTHSIDE –  With the playoffs out of sight, the seniors from Sandalwood took care of business Friday night, going out on top with an impressive 52-13 victory over rival Atlantic Coast.

Sandalwood (7-3) scored 38 points in the first half as they easily defeated Atlantic Coast to end their regular season. The Saints got big performances from Kyjuan Herndon (190 yards, 3 touchdowns) in the first half and wide receiver Taylin Nalls, who showed out once again scoring on two long touchdown receptions from 60 yards and 51 yards in the game.

Quarterback Jeff Sims was surgical on the evening tossing three touchdowns on the night including two long touchdowns to Nalls, while also hooking up with Javonte Kinsey on a 38 yard completion. Sims also scored on a four yard run on the ground as well.

Atlantic Coast got scores from running-back Joshua Coffey, who scored on a 3 yard rushing touchdown, and a 38 yard touchdown reception from Gabriel Melvin from quarterback Bubba Wohlgemuth.

The seniors started off strong for the Stingrays, but Sandalwood’s defense stiffened. Phillip Starks intercepted a pass, and senior Antonio Clary made plays in the secondary to stifle the Atlantic Coast air attack. The interception help set up senior Jared Geis 11 yard touchdown run, which gave the Saints an early 7-0 lead.

It was an emotional game as Atlantic Coast and Sandalwood have developed a rivalry over the years. Before halftime there was a dust up to which players and coaches had to be separated at mid-field. A parent also came on to the field and was escorted from the stadium by police. The two teams did not shake hands after the game, however both Coach Hill and Geis agreed on the decision.

Atlantic Coast Wide Receiver Patrick Bryant

Atlantic Coast will look to build on this year by developing the talent they already have. Talent like second year wide receiver Patrick Bryant who has already secured an offer from the University of Miami.

As for Sandalwood, their post season hopes fell short, but they are excited about the future and improvement from a 5-5 season last year. Sims returns along with running back Kyjaun Herndon as well as defensive back Jahquez Robinson, which will be tremendous assets as senior leaders for the team.

Both Southside teams should be able to bring the heat next year by bringing back extraordinary talent.
