Raines Makes Short Work of Marianna in Playoff Debut

Jacksonville- After a first round bye, the Raines Vikings debuted their 2018 playoff campaign with a 47-9 landslide victory of Marianna. The defending class 4A champions are making an unprecedented push to reach and win a state title in back to back years for the first time in Jacksonville public school history. If Friday was any indication of the end result, it was certainly a great start.

Running back Brandon Marshall scored three touchdowns on the night, including a 66-yard scamper to start the game. Marshall led the Vikings in the 2017 playoffs with strong rushing, and his effort against Marianna showed that he’s looking to repeat. Marshall scored is second touchdown just five minutes into the contest and the route was on.

Marshall is surrounded by new weapons this year and they are excelling in every way. Quarterback Barron Coates is one of those players. He scored his first touchdown against Marianna on the ground, eluded tacklers on the way to the end zone to close the first quarter. His second quarter touchdown to speedster Daivarus Thomas made the score 26-0. Thomas showed his incredible athleticism, weaving past defenders on a screen pass to pay dirt.

In the second half, another play maker for Raines, Jamon Handy showed why this team is dangerous on offense. He scored two touchdowns on the ground to close out the scoring on the night. With the win, Raines moves on to the regional final to host West Nassau next week. West Nassau defeated South Walton 35-20 to advance to the regional final setting up a rematch from last year. Raines won that contest 57-15.
