ORLANDO – The third time was the charm for No. 2 seed Orlando Christian Prep, who not only won their first ever Sunshine State Athletic Conference but slayed the two-time defending champions No. 1 seed St. Stephens Falcons as well. The Warriors (9-2) cruised through the playoffs unscathed, including a 35-14 win over the Falcons in the title game.
After earning a first round bye, OCP took out No. 6 Christ’s Church 42-15 in the quarterfinals, a week after the Eagles stunned host No. 3 Cedar Creek 42-30 in the first round.
Not surprisingly, the Warriors were well represented on the All-SSAC team recently released by the league with three guys on the second team.
Christ’s Church, coached by Jim Stomps, was represented with two guys on the team, including repeat performers senior defensive lineman Jacob Reeves (first team) and offensive lineman Matt Jaroszeski (second team). Reeves was a second team selection last year while Jaroszeski was an honorable mention selection last year.
Cedar Creek, coached by Jamie Gamel, playing in its first year in the league and won the First Coast Division was represented by senior tailback Kareem Mixson on the second team offense.
COACHES OF THE YEAR
In addition to the All-SSAC team, the conference also announced its Coaches of the Year in both leagues, as well as its Scholarship Award recipient. Bradenton St. Stephens coach Tod Crenti was named the Coral League Coach of the Year, while Oviedo Masters Academy coach Jermel Jones was named the Coastal Coach of the Year.
