Boys Basketball: Darnell-Cookman Flies High Over Dupont For The Win

Dupont Middle- Darnell-Cookman did their best Bruno Mars, Gucci Mane and Kodak Black impersonations, waking up in the sky and flying high to a 33-23 win over Dupont in week 2 action of Duval County middle school basketball. KuStarr Webb led the Vikings with 19 points and 7 steals. Elijah Brooks would put up 9 points. Akari Topey led in rebounds with a total of 7. Landon Shinego contributed 2 points , 5 steals and 4 assists along with Jason Lopez scoring 3 points.

 

Cookman began the game by setting the atmosphere when they would score 6 points in a row before Dupont finally graced the scoreboard. Once the Dragons scored, the tug of war battle between the two teams would begin. Cookman’s Webb would become Dupont’s trouble in the paint as he glided through with soaring layups.

Brooks’s nice 3-pointer added momentum to the Vikings upbeat pace. Dupont’s Murphy assured the crowd of their ability to hang when he executed a clean 3-pointer teaming up with McDuffie and Foreman to put up shots against Cookman. The pressuring of Dupont’s guards by the Cookman forced the Dragons to land layups with their big men in the paint. Ultimately, Cookman would end the first quarter leading Dupont 13-9. 

 

Second quarter action would not fail the enthusiastic crowd as Dupont would raise the bar by matching Cookman point for point. Johnson and Alamo would break into an array of shots outscoring Cookman 12-4. Dupont would capitalize on steals and Cookman’s missed points to end the first half of the game leading 21-17.

The third quarter brawl proved to be a seemingly difficult challenge as Dupont would only score 2 points which were resulted from free-throws. Cookman’s aggressive rebounding and strong control of the middle by Topey hindered Dupont’s offense. Webb subsequently continued his reign leading the Vikings by sending shots of thunder and air flowing layups polished with a hook shot. Cookman would close out the third quarter leading Dupont 28-23.

Both teams would upon stumble the fourth quarter with locked horns as both of the defenses would halt any scoring attempts. Cookman would eventually score with a little over 3 minutes left within the fourth. Dupont could not have predicted the forecast of Viking showers hailing from the Southside skies. Webb would once again secure the shots while Brooks landed a shot sending Cookman to a 33-23 victory over Dupont. Cookman will face Southside next week.
