DELAND -Exactly a year ago this time, Bolles benefited from a late goal before half carrying the Bulldogs to their seventh overall state title with a 4-0 win over Oxbridge.
A year later, it happened again, down 1-0 early to Cardinal Gibbons in the first half it wasn’t looking good for Bolles. However just like last year, a bit of dejavu spurred the Bulldogs to another state title as Avery Peterson drilled a penalty kick with six minutes till half tying the game at 1-1.
Like last year instead of going in the half scoreless they went into the half ahead 1-0 with confidence; this year they went into the locker room tied 1-1 full of confidence now.
The defense tightened up and didn’t allow the Chiefs a serious threat again and the offense came out firing on all cylinders leashing out a potent attack.
It took barely four minutes into the second half before Bolles established a lead they would never relinquish on a 25 yard shot from Olivia Candelino giving Bolles a 2-1 lead.
Avery Patterson fed a wide open Izzy Kimberly, who made the Chiefs defense pay making it 3-1 late in the second half.
Patterson off a feed from Candelino put it away with a uncontested goal and 4-1 lead in the 60th minute to put the game away.
Three minutes later, Candelino found Aubrey Ramsey for a fifth goal and 5-1 lead.
Bolles (19-3-2) coasted from there behind its defense not giving the Chiefs a chance to get back into the game, while winning its fourth state title in five years and eighth overall.
In winning its eighth overall, Bolles moved into fourth place all time in overall state titles behind St. Thomas Aquinas (15), St. Johns Country Day (11), Plantation American Heritage (10).
