GREEN COVE SPRINGS – Clay High came out strong against arch-rival Fleming Island defeating the Eagles 9-0; which helped them finish undefeated in the regular season.
Both teams had strong offenses, throughout the first quarter. Towards the end of the second quarter is when the action for both teams started to pull together.
An Eagles safety mishap gave Clay a 2-0 advantage of 2 points early in the quarter.
Wide Receiver Skye Paradise for Clay caught a lot of the passes and ran hard towards the end zone.
Alexis Stilianou rans in a touchdown for Clay with eight seconds left before the half to give Clay a 9-0 lead.
In the third quarter, Hope Rozier ran the ball up the middle of the field, while Aubrey Burk got to the sidelines to catch the ball.
As the clock ran down in the fourth quarter with Clay leading 9-0 still; an interception by Madison Moss gave the Eagles one final chance. However, Fleming Island went for it on fourth and goal but wasn’t successful
Both coaches Jared Moses for Clay and Clint Lyons for Fleming Island caught up and talked about the game against each other. Both teams showed great sportsmanship towards each other as well.
Both coaches will know set this sights on getting back to the playoffs as the district tournament starts this week.
Clay (10-0) will host the District 4-1A tournament April 23 and April 25 at CB Bowles Stadium. Semifinals will be played April 23 at 6 and 7:30, followed by the championship game April 25 at 7 p.m.
Fleming Island (7-2) will compete in the District 1-2A tournament April 23 at Mandarin with the semifinals and the championship all on the same day at 5, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
